ekanini / ekanligini

Where or What Something Is

Level 5

ekanini and ekanligini mean that ... is or where/what ... is inside a longer sentence: Kutubxona qayerda ekanini bilmayman (I don't know where the library is).

How It Works

1. The pattern
Uzbek usually does not use a separate word like English that here. Instead, the clause becomes a noun and takes the -ni ending:

  • U shifokor. (She is a doctor.) → U shifokor ekanini aytdi. (She said that she was a doctor.)
  • Kutubxona qayerda? → Kutubxona qayerda ekanini bilmayman. (I don't know where the library is.)

2. Two forms, one meaning
ekanini is ekan + possessive + -ni. ekanligini adds -lik first. They mean the same thing. Ekanligini is longer and a little more formal.

3. The possessive shows who

  • Men talaba ekanimni aytdim. (I said that I was a student.)
  • Siz oʻqituvchi ekaningizni bilmagan edim. (I didn't know that you were a teacher.)
  • U haq ekanini tushundim. (I understood that he was right.)

The subject can also take -ning: uning haq ekanini.

4. Indirect questions
Keep the question word where it was: qayerda, kim, nima, qancha, qanday. Bu koʻylak qancha ekanini soʻradim (I asked how much this dress was). For a yes-no question, use -mi yoʻqmi instead.

5. Other endings
The same clause can take other case endings or uchun: U haq ekaniga ishonaman (I believe that he is right), kasal ekani uchun (because he is ill).

6. With action verbs
Ekan fits best after nouns, adjectives, place words and bor/yoʻq. For a finished action, learners usually want -ganini: U kelganini bilaman (I know that he came).

Examples (6)

  1. Kutubxona qayerda ekanini bilmayman.

I don't know where the library is.

Word by Word: Library where being-its-ACC I-don't-know.

  3. Siz oʻqituvchi ekaningizni bilmagan edim.

I didn't know that you were a teacher.

Word by Word: You teacher being-your-ACC I-hadn't-known.

  4. Bu koʻylak qancha ekanini soʻradim.

I asked how much this dress was.

Word by Word: This dress how-much being-its-ACC I-asked.

  5. Toshkentda bunday joy bor ekanini bilmasdim.

I didn't know there was a place like this in Tashkent.

    Word by Word: Tashkent-in such place there-is being-its-ACC I-didn't-know.

  6. Hamma uning haq ekanini tushundi.

Everyone understood that he was right.

Word by Word: Everyone his right being-its-ACC understood.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the possessive ending before -ni.

    U shifokor ekanni aytdi.
    U shifokor ekanini aytdi.

Ekan needs a possessive ending before a case ending: ekanini (his, her), ekanimni (my), ekaningizni (your).

  • Using the third-person ending when you mean yourself (meant: I said that I was a student).

    Men talaba ekanini aytdim.
    Men talaba ekanimni aytdim.

Ekanini means that he or she was a student. Match the possessive to the person: ekanimni for "I".
