shunday / bunday

Such, Like This

Level 3

Bunday and shunday mean "such" or "like this": bunday savol (such a question), Shunday qiling (Do it this way).

How It Works

Bunday and shunday come from the pointing words bu and shu. Where bu means this, bunday means like this or this kind of. They answer the question qanday: "what kind?" or "how?".

Three jobs.

  • Before a noun: such, this kind of. bunday savol (such a question), shunday odam (such a person).
  • Before a verb: like this, this way. Shunday qiling (Do it this way), Bunday qilmang (Don't do that).
  • Before an adjective: so. Havo shunday issiq! (It's so hot!)

Which one? Bunday points at what is right here, in front of you. Shunday points at something just mentioned or already known, and it is the more common of the two. Unday is for something further away: Unday emas (It's not like that).

Useful phrases.

  • Shunday qilib: so, and so (to sum up or move a story on).
  • Shunday emasmi?: isn't that so?
  • Shunday boʻlsa ham: even so.
  • Bunday boʻlmaydi: this won't do, it doesn't work like this.

Everyday speech. In conversation you will often hear shunaqa, bunaqa and unaqa with the same meaning. They are informal; use shunday and bunday in writing.

Such vs this. Do not use shunday when you mean one exact thing. Menga shu kitob kerak means "I need this book"; Menga shunday kitob kerak means "I need a book like this".

Common Mistakes

  • Using bu or shu before a verb to mean "like this".

    Bu qilmang!
    Bunday qilmang!

Bu and shu point at things. To say how an action is done, use bunday or shunday.

  • Using shunday when you mean one exact thing.

Menga shunday kitob kerak. (meaning: I need this exact book)
    Menga shu kitob kerak.

Shunday kitob means "a book like this". For the book itself, use shu.
