-gudek / -guday

Enough to, Fit to: -gudek

Level 5

-gudek means worth doing or fit to do before a noun, and enough to before a verb: Yegudek narsa bormi? (Is there anything fit to eat?), Yiqilgudek charchadim (I was tired enough to drop).

How It Works

1. Building it
verb stem + -gudek or -guday. They mean the same, just like -dek and -day. After k and q the g changes, as in other g- endings:

  • ayt- → aytgudek, ye- → yegudek, koʻr- → koʻrgudek
  • chiq- → chiqqudek

2. Worth doing, fit to do
Before a noun, it describes what the thing is good for: koʻrgudek joylar (places worth seeing), yegudek narsa (something fit to eat). It is very common with yoʻq: Aytgudek gapim yoʻq (I have nothing worth saying).

3. Enough to, to the point of
Before a verb or adjective, it shows degree, often with a vivid picture: Yiqilgudek charchadim (I was tired enough to drop), Qornim yorilgudek toʻydim (I'm so full I could burst).

4. With boʻlmoq: nearly
-gudek boʻlmoq means someone was about to do it: U yiqilgudek boʻlib, devorni ushlab qoldi (He was about to fall and grabbed the wall). Compare -a yozmoq (nearly did).

5. Not a future participle
For the guests who will come, use -(a)digan: keladigan mehmonlar. -gudek is about worth, degree or being about to happen, not a plain future.

Examples (6)

  1. Aytgudek gapim yoʻq.

    I have nothing worth saying.

    Word by Word: Worth-saying word-my there-is-not.

  2. Yegudek narsa bormi?

Is there anything fit to eat?

Word by Word: Fit-to-eat thing is-there?

  3. Yiqilgudek charchadim.

I was tired enough to drop.

    Word by Word: Enough-to-fall I-got-tired.

  4. Bu shaharda koʻrgudek joylar koʻp.

There are many places worth seeing in this city.

Word by Word: This city-in worth-seeing places many.

  5. U yiqilgudek boʻlib, devorni ushlab qoldi.

He was about to fall and grabbed the wall.

Word by Word: He about-to-fall becoming, wall-ACC holding remained.

  6. Qornim yorilgudek toʻydim.

I'm so full I could burst.

    Word by Word: Belly-my enough-to-burst I-got-full.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping g after a verb that ends in q.

    Jahlim chiqgudek boʻldi.
    Jahlim chiqqudek boʻldi.

After q, the ending is -qudek: chiq- becomes chiqqudek (I nearly lost my temper).

  • Using -gudek as a future participle (meant: the guests who will come tomorrow).

    Ertaga kelgudek mehmonlar
    Ertaga keladigan mehmonlar

-gudek means worth doing or enough to do, not will do. For a future description, use -(a)digan.
