-a/-y yozmoq
Nearly Did: -a Yozmoq
Verb + -a or -y + yozmoq = nearly did it: yiqila yozdim (I nearly fell), unuta yozibman (I almost forgot).
How It Works
1. Building the form
Add -a after a consonant or -y after a vowel, then put yozmoq in the past with the person ending:
- yiqil- → yiqila yozdim (I nearly fell)
- kechik- → kechika yozdik (we were nearly late)
- uxla- → uxlay yozdim (I almost fell asleep)
- yigʻla- → yigʻlay yozdi (she nearly cried)
The spelling rules write the two verbs apart, and they even use yiqila yozdi as their example.
2. It did not happen
Yiqila yozdim means I stayed on my feet. If the action really took place, use the ordinary verb: yiqildim (I fell), or yiqilib ketdim (I suddenly fell).
3. Which past form
Most often it is -di: yiqila yozdim. When you only notice afterwards how close it was, use -(i)bdi: Unuta yozibman! (I almost forgot, I now realize!).
4. Only with the -a form
Yozmoq has this meaning only after -a or -y. After -(i)b it goes back to meaning write.
5. A close relative
-(a)y demoq can also say that something almost happened: Yiqilay dedim (I almost fell).

Common Mistakes
Using the -(i)b form before yozmoq.
Muz ustida yiqilib yozdim.Muz ustida yiqila yozdim.Yozmoq means nearly only after -a or -y. Yiqilib yozdim would mean I fell and then wrote.
Using -a yozmoq for something that really happened.
Yiqila yozdim va oyogʻimni sindirdim.Yiqildim va oyogʻimni sindirdim.Yiqila yozdim means the fall did not happen, so it cannot lead to a broken leg. For a real fall, use yiqildim.
