-roq

Comparing with -roq

Level 2

Adjective + -roq = more, -er: kattaroq (bigger), tezroq (faster), Sekinroq gapiring. (Speak more slowly.)

How It Works

1. The ending
Add -roq to an adjective or adverb. It has one form for every word.

  • katta → kattaroq (bigger)
  • yaxshi → yaxshiroq (better)
  • koʻp → koʻproq (more)
  • erta → ertaroq (earlier), kech → kechroq (later)

2. Than: -dan
The thing you compare with takes -dan and comes before the adjective: Toshkent Samarqanddan kattaroq. (Tashkent is bigger than Samarkand.) When -dan is there, -roq is optional: Samarqanddan katta means the same.

3. A bit more
Without a comparison, -roq often means a bit more or somewhat. It makes requests softer: Sekinroq gapiring. (Speak a bit more slowly.) Ertaroq keling. (Come a bit earlier.)

4. How much more
Put a size word in front:

  • ancha kattaroq (much bigger)
  • sal kattaroq, biroz kattaroq (a little bigger)
  • undan ham kattaroq (even bigger than that)

Juda (very) goes with the plain adjective: juda katta (very big). See A Lot and A Little.

5. The bigger one
With a possessive, the final q of -roq becomes gʻ: kattarogʻi (the bigger one), Kattarogʻini bering. (Give me the bigger one.) See K and Q Soften Before Vowels.

  1. Sekinroq gapiring, iltimos.

  2. Bu uy kattaroq.

    This house is bigger.

  3. Toshkent Samarqanddan kattaroq.

    Tashkent is bigger than Samarkand.

Word by Word: Tashkent Samarkand-from bigger

  4. Bugun ancha issiqroq.

    It is much warmer today.

    Ancha makes the difference bigger.

  5. Koʻproq suv iching.

    Drink more water.

  6. Kattarogʻini bering.

Kattaroq + i + ni: the final q becomes gʻ before the vowel.

Common Mistakes

  • Using eng together with -roq.

    Bu eng kattaroq shahar.
    Bu eng katta shahar.

Eng already means the most. It goes with the plain adjective: eng katta (the biggest).

  • Putting the compared thing after the adjective, like English than.

    Toshkent kattaroq Samarqanddan.
    Toshkent Samarqanddan kattaroq.

In an ordinary sentence, the word with -dan comes before the adjective, and the adjective stays at the end.
