Masculine Singular Perfective Verb + کرنا
An Established or Repeated Practice
A fixed first form → کرنا carries the changing endings.
How It Works
In this construction, a first form such as بنایا or خریدا stays masculine singular. کرنا carries the agreement and time: بنایا کرتی تھی refers to a woman’s past practice.
Learn the established forms rather than copying every ordinary perfective. جانا uses جایا in this pattern, not its usual independent perfective گیا.
Use this as a repeated-practice construction. Do not build a modern simple perfective by changing کرنا to کیا or کی. To describe a completed stretch of repeated activity, choose another suitable construction, such as a habitual participle with رہنا.
Examples (4)
- مریم شام کو تصویریں بنایا کرتی تھی۔
Maryam used to draw pictures in the evening.
بنایا remains masculine singular despite Maryam and the feminine plural object.
- ہم اس دکان سے کتابیں خریدا کرتے تھے۔
We used to buy books from that shop.
خریدا stays fixed while کرتے تھے follows ہم.
- بلال جمعے کو پیدل جایا کرتا ہے۔
Bilal has a habit of going on foot on Fridays.
جایا is the established form used with کرنا.
- آپ کبھی ہمارے ہاں بھی آیا کیجیے۔
Please come and visit us sometimes too.
The respectful instruction invites a repeated practice rather than one specific visit.
Common Mistakes
Making the fixed first participle agree with a female subject.
مریم تصویریں بنائی کرتی تھی۔مریم تصویریں بنایا کرتی تھی۔بنایا stays masculine singular in this repeated-practice construction. کرتی تھی carries feminine agreement.
