-تا / -تی / -تے + رہنا
Continuing or Repeating an Action
Keep the habitual ending before the inflected form of رہنا.
How It Works
The two verb parts follow the subject: مریم لکھتی رہی, بلال لکھتا رہا and ہم لکھتے رہے. The subject stays unmarked even when the activity has a direct object.
The same pattern can describe intermittent repetition. یہاں لوگ آتے رہتے ہیں can mean that people keep coming here on different occasions, rather than that one person never stops arriving.
The past form reports persistence over an earlier interval. A habitual present describes an ongoing tendency, while a request such as کوشش کرتے رہیے asks someone to continue.
