Noun Gender

Foundations

Gender is part of a noun, including a word for an object. Learn it with a short phrase that makes the agreement visible.

How It Works

Compare نیا جوتا and نئی چابی: the adjective for new changes because جوتا is masculine and چابی is feminine.

Keep a useful agreement phrase with a new noun. ٹھنڈا پانی shows that water is masculine; بڑی تصویر shows that picture is feminine. This gives you both a meaning and a form you can reuse.

Some common masculine nouns end in an aa sound and some feminine nouns end in an ii sound. Those are patterns to notice, not a test for every word: پانی ends in ii but is masculine.

Changing grammatical gender is not how you make a noun plural. First learn which gender the noun has; then learn its number and case forms.

Examples (4)

  1. یہ جوتا نیا ہے۔

    This shoe is new.

جوتا is masculine, so the adjective is نیا.

  2. یہ چابی نئی ہے۔

    This key is new.

چابی is feminine, so the adjective is نئی.

  3. پانی ٹھنڈا ہے۔

  4. تصویر بڑی ہے۔

Common Mistakes

  • Guessing gender from the final sound alone.

    پانی ٹھنڈی ہے۔
    پانی ٹھنڈا ہے۔

پانی is masculine. Use ٹھنڈا even though پانی ends in an ii sound.
