Dative Recipient
The Dative Recipient identifies who is receiving something, being told something, or being shown something. It is the 'to' or 'for' in a sentence.
How It Works
The Dative case (давальний відмінок) is primarily used for the indirect object. It answers the questions кому? (to whom?) and чому? (to what?).
1. Masculine Nouns:
Masculine nouns have two parallel endings. The full ending -ові/-еві/-єві is highly preferred for people and animals as it sounds more natural and polite in Ukrainian.
- Hard stems: -ові (братові, Іванові)
- Soft/Hushing stems: -еві (лікареві, товаришеві)
- Stems ending in vowels: -єві (Сергієві)
The short ending -у/-ю is also correct but often used for inanimate objects or to avoid repetition when multiple dative words appear together.
Note: Masculine nouns ending in -а/-я (like Микола, суддя) follow the feminine declension rules below.
2. Feminine Nouns:
Most feminine nouns take the ending -і (or -ї after a vowel).
CRITICAL: If the stem ends in к, г, х, these consonants must change before the -і:
- к → ц: донька → доньці
- г → з: подруга → подрузі
- х → с: муха → мусі
This is a mandatory rule called velar consonant alternation.
Feminine nouns ending in a consonant (3rd declension, e.g., радість, ніч) also take the ending -і (радості, ночі) but do not undergo this consonant alternation.
3. Neuter and Plural:
Neuter nouns usually take -у/-ю (місту). All plural nouns, regardless of gender, take -ам/-ям (друзям, мамам, містам).
Examples (4)
- Я даю книгу братові.
I am giving the book to my brother.
Word by Word: I give book to-brother.
The masculine noun 'брат' takes the preferred '-ові' ending to show he is the recipient.
- Вона пише листа подрузі.
She is writing a letter to a friend.
Word by Word: She writes letter to-friend.
Note the consonant change: 'подруга' becomes 'подрузі' (г changes to з).
- Ми показали фотографії батькам.
We showed the photos to the parents.
Word by Word: We showed photos to-parents.
The plural ending '-ам' is used for the recipient 'батьки'.
- Передай привіт Іванові.
Give my regards to Ivan.
Word by Word: Pass greeting to-Ivan.
Using the '-ові' ending for a person's name is the standard polite way to express the recipient.
Common Mistakes
Forgetting the consonant mutation in feminine nouns.
Я даю іграшку донькі.Я даю іграшку доньці.Learners often forget that stems ending in 'к', 'г', or 'х' must undergo velar consonant alternation before the '-і' ending.
Using the preposition 'до' for the person who receives something.
Я даю книжку до брата.Я даю книжку братові.'До' shows direction and takes the Genitive. The person who receives something with a verb like 'давати' takes the Dative without a preposition. (With 'писати', 'до' is also possible: 'писати листа до брата'.)
Using the Accusative case for the person receiving the object.
Я дарую маму квіти.Я дарую мамі квіти.The person receiving the gift must be in the Dative (мамі), while the gift itself is in the Accusative (квіти).
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn the Dative Recipient, you first need to understand how to identify noun genders (masculine and feminine) as they determine the endings. Additionally, since this pattern usually involves an action performed on an object for someone else, you should be familiar with the Accusative case for direct objects and basic sentence structure.
- Neutral subject-verb-object order
Understanding basic Ukrainian sentence structure and word order is necessary to correctly place the recipient within a sentence.
