Chains of Verbal Nouns
Chains of verbal nouns (ланцюги віддієслівних іменників) occur when multiple nouns ending in -ння or -ття are stacked in the genitive case. While common in official and legal documents, this style is often criticized for being 'heavy' and less clear than using active verbs.
How It Works
In formal Ukrainian, particularly in the офіційно-діловий стиль (official-business style), writers often compress information by turning clauses into noun phrases.
Key Characteristics:
- Morphology: Uses verbal nouns derived from verbs.
- Syntax: Employs genitive chains where every noun after the first is in the genitive case.
- Phonology: Often called някання (nyakanya) due to the repetitive nasal sound of the -ння suffix.
Stylistic Note: While grammatically correct, excessive stacking (more than 3 nouns) is considered poor style. Modern Ukrainian guides recommend replacing these chains with finite verbs or infinitives to make the text more readable and to clearly identify the 'actor' of the sentence.

We discussed the issue of improving the mechanism for providing services.
Word by Word: We discussed issue (Acc.) improvement (Gen.) mechanism (Gen.) providing (Gen.) services (Gen.).

Common Mistakes
Over-nominalization in casual speech.
Я займаюся процесом приготування вечері.Я готую вечерю.Learners often think using more nouns sounds more 'advanced,' but in daily life, it sounds robotic and unnatural. Use simple verbs instead.
Case fatigue (forgetting the genitive).
Здійснення оцінювання ризики виникнення ситуації.Здійснення оцінювання ризиків виникнення ситуації.In long chains, it is easy to lose track of the case. Every subsequent noun modifying the previous one must be in the genitive.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand chains of verbal nouns, a learner must first be comfortable forming verbal nouns (typically ending in -ння) and using the genitive case to link nouns together. Additionally, since this is a stylistic feature of academic Ukrainian, awareness of nominalization and its impact on clarity is necessary.
- Genitive chains with verbal nouns
Chains of verbal nouns are typically linked by the genitive case, which is the structural basis for this pattern.
Level 5 - Register Contrast in Nominalization
Understanding the stylistic context (academic vs. clear style) is essential for knowing when and why to use or avoid these chains.
