อะไร
What
คุณกินอะไร?
You eat what? In this question, อะไร is the object of กิน. Compare the other complete examples for its indefinite meanings.
How It Works
1. Ask What
อะไร asks what in คุณกินอะไร? and follows สี in สีอะไร? In นี่คืออะไร?, คือ identifies what this is. นี่อะไร? is another complete question to compare in context, without a frequency or naturalness ranking.
2. Read an Indefinite Meaning
In มีอะไรจะบอก, อะไร refers to something to tell. In ไม่มีอะไร, it is read within the whole negative expression as nothing or not having anything. ไม่เป็นไร can mean no problem or it is okay in a suitable interaction; this lesson does not derive that expression by deleting a syllable or infer injury from every ไม่เป็นอะไร.
3. Compare Whole Choice Expressions
Compare ก็ได้ in อะไรก็ได้, anything is fine. กินอะไรก็ได้ can express an open choice of food in a suitable context, without making every use an unlimited ability claim.
4. Read Repeated Forms in Context
The repetition mark ๆ can repeat อะไร in อะไรๆ. Read the full phrase rather than assigning every repetition one compulsory everything or whatever meaning. The NIU dictionary separately lists อะไรก็ตาม, whatever, and อะไรต่ออะไร, various things.
5. Ask About Relevant Items
ซื้ออะไรบ้าง? adds บ้าง to ask about the items bought in the selected context. It does not require a plural or exhaustive answer. The Thai does not overtly mark a past tense or name the buyer.
6. Read the Complete Reaction
อะไรกัน! can be a reaction such as what is going on in context. อะไรนะ? is read in the displayed example as asking someone to repeat what was said. Delivery and the interaction affect the force of a reaction or repetition request.
7. Compare Complete Particle Forms
คุณชื่ออะไรครับ? includes ครับ. Compare linked ค่ะ in its own complete constructions; do not infer that it must end every question with อะไร. The example อะไรนะ? contains นะ, without guaranteeing softness, politeness or a particular speaker identity.
8. Follow the Requested Task
The first exercise requests คุณกินอะไร?, with อะไร as the object of กิน; it does not ban every fronted, topic or echo question. The second requests สีไหน when choosing between two displayed shirts. คุณชอบสีอะไร? can instead ask about color preferences more generally. Neither comparison establishes identical meanings for อะไร and ไหน in every context. This written lesson does not certify audio or measured pronunciation variants.
Examples (6)
- นี่คืออะไร?
What is this?
Word by Word: this / is / what
The displayed identifying question includes คือ, is, rather than necessarily becomes. Compare นี่อะไร? as another complete question without a frequency or register ranking.
- คุณชื่ออะไรครับ?
What is your name? (polite)
Word by Word: you / name / what / [polite particle]
คุณ names the listener, ชื่อ names the name, อะไร asks what, and ครับ is the displayed polite particle. The functional English asks for the name; the particle alone does not establish a compulsory speaker identity.
- กินอะไรไหม?
Would [you] like to eat something?
Word by Word: eat / something / [question particle]
Read this full question with ไหม as an invitation or offer concerning eating something. The translation supplies [you] and the willingness reading from that selected context; neither is an overt Thai want verb. This does not give every อะไร with ไหม one automatic meaning.
- ซื้ออะไรบ้าง?
What did [you] buy?
Word by Word: buy / what / [item-list particle]
บ้าง invites mention of relevant items bought in the selected context. It does not require multiple items or an exhaustive list. [You] and completed buying are contextual; the Thai has no overt buyer or past-tense marker.
- ไม่มีอะไร
There is nothing / [I] have nothing.
Word by Word: not-have / anything
The whole expression ไม่มี with อะไร has the selected absence reading, nothing. The alternative [I] have nothing supplies a possessor from context; the Thai does not name one.
- อะไรนะ?
What was that? / Pardon?
Word by Word: what / [particle]
Read the displayed อะไร with นะ as a request to repeat what was said. The complete interaction determines its force; นะ alone does not guarantee softness.
Common Mistakes
Not reproducing the requested object question คุณกินอะไร?.
อะไรคุณกิน?คุณกินอะไร?This task requests คุณกินอะไร?, with อะไร as the object after กิน in the displayed subject-verb-object pattern. The retained อะไรคุณกิน? does not reproduce that requested order; this is not a universal ban on fronted, topic or echo questions.
Not using the requested which-color construction for the two displayed shirts.
คุณชอบสีอะไร? (when pointing at two specific shirts)คุณชอบสีไหน?For the displayed choice between two shirts, the task requests คุณชอบสีไหน?, with ไหน asking which color in that set. คุณชอบสีอะไร? can ask about color preferences more generally; it is not declared ungrammatical in every context or equivalent to the requested question.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use 'อะไร' (what) correctly, you need to understand that Thai question words remain in their natural grammatical position (SVO) rather than being moved to the start of the sentence. Additionally, knowing how to identify objects using demonstrative pronouns and the equative verb 'คือ' provides the necessary structure for basic 'What is...?' questions.
- Question Words In Their Sentence Roles
Thai question words like 'อะไร' do not move to the front of the sentence; they stay in the position of the information being sought.
Level 1 - คือTo Be — Equals
The pattern 'นี่คืออะไร' (What is this?) relies on the equative verb 'คือ' to link the subject to the question word.
Level 1 - นี่ / นั่น / โน่นPointing with นี่, นั่น, And โน่น
Demonstrative pronouns like 'นี่' (this one) are frequently used as subjects when asking 'What is this?' using 'อะไร'.
