ที่ไหน
Where
ที่ไหน (thîi-nǎi) asks about a place. In the simple location questions here, it occupies the place being asked about. The question words stay put pattern is a useful guide, not a rule that every Thai question word must be sentence-final.
How It Works
ที่ไหน is a compound of ที่ (place/at) and ไหน (which). Together, they can ask 'where'. Their interpretation depends on the complete construction.
1. Sentence Position
A simple Thai clause can follow a Subject + Verb + Object structure. In the simple location-question pattern practiced here, the question word occupies the place information being sought. This does not make every question word sentence-final or prohibit all initial question words. For example:
• Statement: 'I go to the market.' (Subject + Verb + Market)
• Question: 'You go where?' (Subject + Verb + ที่ไหน)
2. Indefinite and Negative Usage
Beyond direct questions, ที่ไหน has construction-dependent readings. A negative construction can have an 'anywhere' reading, while the paired construction in the final native example has a 'wherever... there...' reading. These are different constructions, not interchangeable meanings in every sentence. For example, mâi pai thîi-nǎi (ไม่ไปที่ไหน) can mean 'I'm not going anywhere.' The omitted subject and time come from context.
3. Register and Shortening
The full form ที่ไหน can be used without assigning every occurrence a formal register. In suitable conversational contexts a shorter question can use ไหน (nǎi) or อยู่ไหน (yùu-nǎi) for someone's location. The shorter forms need a suitable context; they are not automatic replacements in every construction.
4. Specificity
While ที่ไหน is general, you might use แถวไหน (thǎew-nǎi) if you are asking for a general area or neighborhood, or ตรงไหน (trong-nǎi) when asking which point or spot (e.g., 'Where exactly on the map?').
5. Rhetorical Usage
In casual Thai, some expressions with ที่ไหน after a predicate can convey a rhetorical denial. The interpretation depends on the exchange and delivery, not just on an adjective followed by the question word. For example, phèt thîi-nǎi (Spicy where?) can express 'It's not spicy!' in a denying context. It is not a general rule for negating every adjective.
Examples (5)
- คุณอยู่ที่ไหน?
Where are you?
Word by Word: You | be at | where?
This uses the verb อยู่ to ask for a current location.
- ห้องน้ำอยู่ที่ไหนครับ?
Where is the restroom?
Word by Word: Restroom | be at | where | [polite particle]?
A standard way to ask for a location, ending with the polite particle.
- คุณจะไปที่ไหน?
Where are you going?
Word by Word: You | will | go | where?
Uses จะ for an anticipated action and ไป for movement. The question asks about the destination; it does not prove the person's intention or that the journey will happen.
- เขากินข้าวที่ไหน?
Where does he eat?
Word by Word: He | eat | rice | where?
Here 'gin' (to eat) is the main action verb, and the question asks where eating takes place. 'yùu' (to be at) is not needed for this simple reading; other constructions can include it with a location or ongoing action meaning.
- ที่ไหนมีเธอ ที่นั่นจะมีฉัน
Wherever you are, there I will be.
Word by Word: Where | have | you | that place | will | have | me
This pairs a 'wherever' clause with a 'there' clause. It illustrates a correlative reading rather than an ordinary direct location question; the complete paired construction supports the supplied gloss.
Common Mistakes
Moving 'where' to the front in the simple destination-question pattern practiced here.
ที่ไหนคุณไป?คุณไปที่ไหน?For the intended simple destination question, keep the question word in the place slot after the movement verb, as in the second string. Thai question-word positions depend on their grammatical role and construction; this pair does not show that all question words must stay at the end or can never occur initially.
Adding 'yùu' when the intended question only asks where eating takes place.
กินข้าวอยู่ที่ไหน?กินข้าวที่ไหน?For the intended simple eating-location question, use the second string. The first can be grammatical with an ongoing-action reading in a suitable context, so it is not universally incorrect. 'yùu' has location and aspect uses; adding or removing it can change the intended meaning.
Misspelling the question word in a written location question.
คุณไปที่ใหน?คุณไปที่ไหน?The incorrect string uses the wrong vowel sign in the second part of the question word. Use the spelling shown in the corrected string, which asks 'Where are you going?' This is a written spelling contrast, not a judgment about a recording's pitch or pronunciation.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use ที่ไหน (where) correctly, you need to understand that Thai question words remain in the same position as the answer (usually at the end of the sentence). It is also essential to know the verb อยู่, as it is the primary way to express being in a location before asking 'where'.
- อยู่ (สถานที่)To Be in a Place
The word ที่ไหน is most commonly used with the verb อยู่ to ask where someone or something is located.

Thai question words like ที่ไหน do not move to the front of the sentence; they stay in the position of the information being sought.

- ที่ (สถานที่)At a Place
The first part of ที่ไหน is ที่, related to place or location marking; the complete expression asks about a place.
