ไม่มี

No Possession or Existence

Level 1

The displayed ไม่มี clauses describe lacking time or a car, no one being present, no water in a refrigerator, a no-problem response, and a negative pen answer. Compare มี in those complete contexts.

How It Works

1. Having and Existence
In these examples, ไม่มี negates มี, with ไม่ before มี. ผมไม่มีรถ describes not having a car; ในตู้เย็นไม่มีน้ำ describes no water in the refrigerator. NIU’s selected มี entry also supplies negative water and not-yet-occurring-event clauses. The whole clause determines possession or existence; this is not a rule that ไม่มี merely negates nouns or that every context has one tense.

2. Context and Unstated Participants
ไม่มีเวลา leaves its possessor unstated. The translation “[I] don’t have time” chooses a contextual speaker reading. ไม่มีใครอยู่ says no one is present; it does not name “here” or describe someone’s residence. The refrigerator example states a location explicitly. Read the complete wording before supplying an unstated person or place.

3. A Short Answer
The pen exchange uses ไหม in the question and ไม่มีครับ in the answer. “[You]” and “[I]” in its translation are contextually inferred. Compare ครับ and ค่ะ as particles in complete utterances without a rule that every short answer requires one to prevent rudeness or guarantee politeness.

4. No Problem and Added Emphasis
ไม่มีปัญหา has the selected “no problem” reading; it can be used in a contextual response without verifying that no actual problem exists or instructing someone to relax. Compare เลย in the complete ไม่มีเลย phrase for an “at all” reading in an appropriate negative context. The six native examples here do not themselves contain เลย.

5. The Requested Contrasts
The first exercise requests ผมไม่ใช่หมอ to deny being a doctor. ผมไม่มีหมอ can instead state not having a doctor, so it is meaningful but does not express the requested identity statement. The second exercise requests the negative answer ไม่มี rather than the question มีไหม. Judge the forms against those tasks rather than banning questions or meaningful possession statements.

Examples (6)

  1. ไม่มีเวลา

    [I] don’t have time.

Word by Word: not | have | time

No possessor is stated. “[I]” selects a contextual speaker reading; the example does not establish a frequency or a rule requiring subjects to be omitted.

  2. ผมไม่มีรถ

    I don’t have a car.

Word by Word: I | not | have | car

ผม is the stated subject and ไม่มีรถ supplies the no-car possession reading. The sentence does not by itself assert a past event or a speaker’s identity beyond the pronoun convention.

  3. ไม่มีใครอยู่

    No one is present.

    Word by Word: not | have/exist | anyone | อยู่ [be present]

อยู่ is read as being present in this clause, not as living or residing somewhere. No location word meaning “here” is written.

  4. ในตู้เย็นไม่มีน้ำ

There is no water in the refrigerator.

    Word by Word: in | refrigerator | not | have/exist | water

ในตู้เย็น states the refrigerator location before the no-water clause. The translation illustrates this wording rather than verifying any actual refrigerator.

  5. ไม่มีปัญหา

    No problem.

Word by Word: not | have/exist | problem

The selected response reading is “no problem.” Its conversational force depends on context; the phrase does not prove no difficulty exists or inherently tell someone to relax.

  6. มีปากกาไหม? -> ไม่มีครับ

    Do [you] have a pen? -> No, [I] don’t.

Word by Word: have | pen | ไหม [question particle]? -> not | have | ครับ [particle]

The exchange supplies an item question and short negative answer. The person pronouns are inferred; ครับ is present in this native answer, while ค่ะ can be compared in its own context without a universal politeness or rudeness rule.

Common Mistakes

  • Not reproducing the requested not-a-doctor identity statement.

    ผมไม่มีหมอ
    ผมไม่ใช่หมอ

The task requests ผมไม่ใช่หมอ for “I am not a doctor.” ผมไม่มีหมอ can meaningfully describe not having a doctor; it gives a different possession statement rather than the requested identity denial.

  • Not reproducing the requested negative answer ไม่มี.

    มีไหม (as a statement)
    ไม่มี

This task requests ไม่มี as a negative answer. มีไหม instead asks a have/existence question, with its unstated subject or object determined by context. The preserved exercise annotation “as a statement” specifies the task; it does not make the question universally invalid.
