ไหม
Yes-No Question Particle
ไหม marks a yes-no question in the retained examples. It follows the content being questioned. In คุณหิวไหมคะ and เข้าใจไหมครับ, a polite particle follows ไหม.
How It Works
1. Read the Questioned Content
In คุณหิวไหมคะ, ไหม follows คุณหิว and asks whether the addressee is hungry. In เข้าใจไหมครับ, it follows เข้าใจ; the translation supplies the understood addressee. These displayed forms do not establish one word-order rule for every Thai question.
2. Read Following Particles Too
The retained questions place ครับ or คะ after ไหม. Thus ไหม is not necessarily the last written word. Compare the linked มั้ย spelling in its own context. Written examples do not measure how often a pronunciation or spelling occurs, and this lesson does not certify recorded speech.
3. Distinguish the Requested Question
คุณชื่ออะไร requests a name, whereas the displayed hunger question asks for a yes-or-no response. This does not ban every form containing อะไร and ไหม: the retained เอาอะไรไหม is interpreted here as an offer asking whether the addressee wants anything. The invitation ไปเที่ยวด้วยกันไหม likewise depends on its complete context.
4. Distinguish Question and Negation
For a short response to a simple verb or adjective question, the displayed teaching pattern repeats that predicate for yes, or places ไม่ before it for no. For example, หิว and ไม่หิว answer a hunger question. The retained exercise alternative คุณหิวไม่ is not the ordinary negative statement คุณไม่หิว; changing only the final spelling does not move the negative particle before หิว.
5. Keep the Written Exercise Scoped
The third exercise requests สบายดีไหมคะ with คะ. It compares that written question form with the retained สบายดีไหมค่ะ. The exercise does not establish a compulsory choice for every speaker or every social situation. These yes-no questions can seek information, make an offer, or invite someone; they are not open-ended requests for an unrestricted answer.
Examples (4)
- คุณหิวไหมคะ
Are you hungry?
Word by Word: you / hungry / [question] / [polite]
ไหม follows คุณหิว, and คะ follows ไหม. The example asks about hunger; the written particle alone does not independently establish the speaker’s gender or relationship to the addressee.
- เข้าใจไหมครับ
Do you understand?
Word by Word: understand / [question] / [polite]
The retained Thai has no explicit subject. The translation selects the addressee from context. ครับ follows ไหม; this example does not establish how frequently subjects are omitted or a compulsory particle for every speaker.
- ไปเที่ยวด้วยกันไหม
Would you like to go out together?
Word by Word: go out / together / [question]
The selected context is an invitation to go out together. ไปเที่ยว is rendered as the outing phrase, and ด้วยกัน retains together. The participant and invitation interpretation come from context, not an explicit want verb or a measured frequency claim.
- เอาอะไรไหม
Would you like anything?
Word by Word: take or want / anything / [question]
In the selected offer context, เอา is interpreted as want or take and อะไร as anything. Read the complete เอาอะไรไหม; this is not a rule that ไหม changes every occurrence of อะไร into an indefinite word. The addressee is inferred.
Common Mistakes
Adding a yes-no marker to the requested name question.
คุณชื่ออะไรไหมคุณชื่ออะไรFor the requested question asking the addressee’s name, choose คุณชื่ออะไร. The retained คุณชื่ออะไรไหม adds ไหม to that form. This exercise compares the requested name question; it does not ban all combinations of question words and ไหม, as the retained เอาอะไรไหม offer demonstrates.
Replacing ไหม with terminal ไม่ in the requested hunger question.
คุณหิวไม่คุณหิวไหมFor the requested yes-no question “Are you hungry?”, choose คุณหิวไหม. Preserve the alternative คุณหิวไม่ for comparison, but do not label it the ordinary negative statement “You are not hungry”: that statement places ไม่ before หิว, as in คุณไม่หิว. This task checks the displayed question marker and placement, not a claim that tone alone converts these two retained strings into question and declarative negation.
Choosing คะ for the requested written polite question.
สบายดีไหมค่ะสบายดีไหมคะFor this requested written polite question, choose สบายดีไหมคะ. The retained สบายดีไหมค่ะ differs in its final particle. Compare คะ and ค่ะ in the linked complete contexts rather than imposing this choice on every speaker, identity or social situation. No recording is evaluated here.
