เพื่อให้

So That

Level 5

Use เพื่อให้ to read the purpose of speaking slowly, introducing a law, exercising, or writing a name in these examples. The intended outcome is not guaranteed to happen.

How It Works

1. Displayed Purposes
Each example presents an action followed by เพื่อให้ and the desired outcome. Speaking slowly aims at his understanding; the law example states an intended increase in safety; exercising aims at a strong body; writing a name is requested to enable contact. These are the example speakers' statements, not evidence that the outcomes occurred.

2. Compare Complete Constructions
NIU defines เพื่อ as for the sake of or in order to, and เพื่อให้ as in order to or so that. Compare linked ให้ in its purpose examples. The four displayed outcomes identify their participants explicitly; this does not establish a compulsory overt-subject rule or a universal noun-versus-clause restriction.

3. Other Purpose and Consequence Forms
Compare เพื่อที่จะ in complete purpose phrases; NIU also glosses it as in order to. Do not assign เพื่อที่จะ an exclusive same-person action rule or เพื่อให้ an exclusive other-person result rule. Read จะได้ in its own complete context rather than assuming universal interchangeability or a register ranking. Compare linked ก็เลย in consequence statements with the intended purposes here.

4. Requested Exercises
The speaking exercise asks for พูดเพื่อให้เขาเข้าใจ. The gift exercise asks for ซื้อของขวัญให้แม่, which identifies the mother as recipient. ซื้อของขวัญเพื่อให้แม่ can be read in a suitable context as buying a gift in order to give it to the mother, with omitted material understood; it does not reproduce the requested recipient phrase. Neither task establishes a blanket ban on meaningful contextual alternatives.

Examples (4)

  1. ฉันพูดช้าๆ เพื่อให้เขาเข้าใจ

I speak slowly so that he understands.

Word by Word: I | speak | slowly | so that | he | understand

Speaking slowly is presented as an action intended to help him understand. The purpose clause does not prove that he understood.

  2. รัฐบาลออกกฎหมายใหม่ เพื่อให้ประชาชนมีความปลอดภัยมากขึ้น

The government introduced a new law so that citizens would be safer.

Word by Word: government | introduce | new law | so that | citizens | have | greater safety

The example speaker states the law's intended safety goal. This grammar example does not verify any actual law, its effect, or a claim that citizens became safer.

  3. ผมออกกำลังกายทุกวัน เพื่อให้ร่างกายแข็งแรง

I exercise every day so that my body is strong.

Word by Word: I | exercise | every day | so that | body | strong

The speaker presents a strong body as the purpose of exercising. This concerns the speaker themselves and does not guarantee the desired result.

  4. กรุณาเขียนชื่อของคุณ เพื่อให้เราติดต่อกลับได้

Please write your name so that we can contact you again.

Word by Word: please | write | your name | so that | we | contact back | can

The request to write a name is linked to the intended ability to contact the addressed person again. The contact object is understood in context, not stated again after ติดต่อ.

Common Mistakes

  • Omitting ให้ from the requested speaking-purpose construction.

    พูดเพื่อเขาเข้าใจ
    พูดเพื่อให้เขาเข้าใจ

This exercise requests พูดเพื่อให้เขาเข้าใจ, with เพื่อให้ introducing his understanding as the intended outcome. พูดเพื่อเขาเข้าใจ does not reproduce that displayed construction. The task does not establish a universal ban on every clause following เพื่อ.

  • Using a purpose construction instead of the requested recipient phrase.

    ซื้อของขวัญเพื่อให้แม่
    ซื้อของขวัญให้แม่

This exercise requests ซื้อของขวัญให้แม่, buying a gift for the mother as recipient. ซื้อของขวัญเพื่อให้แม่ can have a contextual purpose reading, buying it in order to give it to her, with omitted material understood. It is not universally meaningless; use the exact requested recipient construction here.

Learn This First

เพื่อให้ is a compound grammar pattern used to express purpose ('so as to' or 'in order that'). To understand it, you need to be familiar with the individual components: 'เพื่อ' (in order to) and 'ให้' (to give/to let/to make). It specifically functions to show that an action is performed so that a certain result or state is achieved, often affecting someone or something else.
