เพื่อ
In Order to
Use เพื่อ (phûea) to give the purpose of an action or say whose benefit it serves. It can mean 'in order to', 'for', or 'for the sake of'.
How It Works
1. With a Noun
เพื่อ can mean 'for the sake of' or 'for the benefit of': ทำงานเพื่อลูก means 'Work for one's children.' It also introduces a goal such as เพื่ออนาคต ('for the future') or เพื่อสุขภาพ ('for health').
2. With a Verb Phrase
เพื่อ can mean 'in order to': มาเพื่อเรียน means 'Come in order to study.' It makes the intention clear.
3. An Intended Result
Use เพื่อให้ to introduce a result you want to bring about. In เราต้องรีบไปเพื่อให้ทันรถไฟ, the intended result is being in time for the train; ให้ is not the verb 'give' here.
4. Different Ways to Say 'For'
ให้ commonly shows that you do an action for someone: ฉันซื้อขนมให้คุณ means 'I buy snacks for you.' ฉันซื้อขนมเพื่อคุณ is also possible when you stress that you do it for the person's sake. These are choices of emphasis, not a rule that small favors cannot use เพื่อ. สำหรับ often names the intended user or use of something.
5. Keep the Two Words Apart
เพื่อ has a falling tone. เผื่อ has a low tone and can mean 'just in case' or mark something extra set aside for someone. Choose the word for the meaning you intend.

- เราต้องรีบไปเพื่อให้ทันรถไฟ

Common Mistakes
Choosing เผื่อ when you mean 'for the sake of'.
ซื้อเผื่อคุณซื้อเพื่อคุณBoth phrases are possible, but they express different intentions. ซื้อเผื่อคุณ suggests buying an extra share or allowing for you. For the intended meaning 'buy it for your sake', use ซื้อเพื่อคุณ. เพื่อ has a falling tone; เผื่อ has a low tone.
