How It Works

Adding a Contrasting Point
อย่างไรก็ดี can mean 'however' or 'nevertheless'. It connects the previous point with a contrast or qualification. In the research example, satisfactory results are followed by the remaining need for long-term study. This connection does not establish that the first claim is true or that both points have equal weight.

1. Introduce the Next Point
In these examples, อย่างไรก็ดี introduces the next clause after the previous point. Learn that placement from the full sentence; it is not a rule that the expression requires a semicolon or occurs in one position almost every time. แต่ also expresses 'but', as in the short contrast หิวข้าวมาก แต่ไม่มีเงิน ('Very hungry, but no money').

2. An Additional ก็
The expression already contains ก็. A later ก็ belongs to the structure of the following clause when used; it is not required just because the connector appears. None of this entry's three examples needs a second ก็.

3. Compare Other Connectors
อย่างไรก็ตาม can also introduce a however/nevertheless contrast. ยังไงก็ can convey 'anyway/no matter what', so do not substitute it automatically for every contrast. These examples use written research, economic, and policy contexts; they do not establish that อย่างไรก็ดี is forbidden in conversation or always sounds unnatural.

4. A Single-Connector Editing Task
For a task that asks for one contrast connector, อย่างไรก็ดี เราควรระวัง supplies one. Adding แต่ before it does not meet that particular one-connector request. This is an editing comparison, not a universal grammatical ban on sentences containing both words.

Common Mistakes

  • Not using the requested simple แต่ contrast in this short everyday sentence.

    For this task's requested short contrast with แต่, use หิวข้าวมาก แต่ไม่มีเงิน. The alternative with อย่างไรก็ดี can be grammatical, but it uses a different connector. This comparison does not claim that อย่างไรก็ดี is prohibited in casual speech or always sounds like a legal document.

  • Using two contrast connectors when the editing task requests one.
