ดีกว่า
Better and Preferred Choices
อันนี้ดีกว่าอันนั้น compares this one with that one. นอนดีกว่า presents sleeping as the preferred action in the selected context.
How It Works
1. Comparisons:
ดีกว่า occurs in อันนี้ดีกว่าอันนั้น, comparing this one as better than that one. Compare กว่า in its own comparative construction. A written teaching pattern is first item + ดีกว่า + comparison item. Other comparative predicates use their own adjective or adverb with กว่า. This is a pattern comparison, not an etymological proof or an exhaustive rule for every adjective.
2. Preferred actions:
นอนดีกว่า selects sleeping as preferable, while กินร้านนี้ดีกว่านะ selects eating at this restaurant. In these examples the action phrase comes before ดีกว่า. The subject may be understood: the sleeping translation selects I, and the restaurant translation selects an invitation including the listener. Read เอา in its own taking or choosing construction and pronoun dropping with its actual clause; neither link establishes obligatory verbs or a frequency ranking. นะ is retained as an ending in the restaurant example. Its presence alone does not guarantee friendliness or agreement.
3. Questions and declining:
ไปพรุ่งนี้ดีกว่าไหม asks whether going tomorrow would be better, with ไหม. The selected translation uses we, but that subject is understood rather than written. ไม่ดีกว่าครับ is read here as declining an offered option. “No, thank you” is a contextual English rendering, not a word-for-word assertion of thanks. No fixed politeness or frequency claim follows from this example.
4. Negative choices:
ไม่ไปดีกว่า presents not going as preferable, with ไม่ before ไป. The example does not itself name an invitation or a previous plan. Compare อย่า in a prohibition and จะ in a complete modal construction; this entry does not require every suggestion to another person to use อย่า or assign จะ an automatic formal or emphatic effect.
5. Improvement and the tasks:
Compare ดีขึ้น in ภาษาไทยของฉันดีขึ้น for my Thai getting better. The retained exercise requests improvement, while ภาษาไทยของฉันดีกว่า can make a comparison with an understood reference. Another task requests ไปดีกว่า for a preferred going action; ดีกว่าไป does not reproduce that order, without banning every possible ellipsis containing the same words. The advice task requests คุณควรจะเรียนหนัก, meaning you should study hard. The alternative retains ต้อง, which expresses must rather than should; the comparison does not create an absolute moral-versus-situational division.
6. Evidence scope:
The NIU dictionary separately displays ดีกว่า in comparison and preferred-action clauses and defines ดีขึ้น as improvement. These written witnesses support that distinction, not universal placement, register, subject omission, frequency or pronunciation claims.
Examples (6)
- อันนี้ดีกว่าอันนั้น
This one is better than that one.
Word by Word: item this better item that
อันนี้ and อันนั้น identify this one and that one. ดีกว่า expresses the comparison; the sentence does not identify the items or prove their quality.
- นอนดีกว่า
I'd better sleep.
Word by Word: sleep better
The selected translation chooses I as the understood subject and sleeping as preferable. It does not assert that sleeping is objectively best or name any alternative activity.
- กินร้านนี้ดีกว่านะ
Let's eat at this restaurant instead.
Word by Word: eat at this restaurant, better [ending]
The selected context is an invitation to eat at this restaurant including the listener. ร้านนี้ supplies the restaurant reference, and นะ is an ending; friendliness or agreement depends on the exchange.
- ไม่ไปดีกว่า
I'd better not go.
Word by Word: not go better
ไม่ negates ไป, so not going is presented as preferable. The translation selects I as the understood subject; no specific invitation or earlier plan is named.
- ไปพรุ่งนี้ดีกว่าไหม
Would it be better for us to go tomorrow?
Word by Word: go tomorrow better [question]
The retained ไหม asks about the preferred option of going tomorrow. The translation selects an understood we including the listener; the question does not establish agreement or guarantee a soft tone.
- ไม่ดีกว่าครับ
No, thank you.
Word by Word: no, better [ending]
In an offer exchange this can be read as declining, rendered here as No, thank you. Thanks is contextual rather than a separately written Thai word, and ครับ is an ending; politeness is not guaranteed solely by the string.
Common Mistakes
Not using the requested preferred-action order.
ดีกว่าไปไปดีกว่าThis task requests ไปดีกว่า for a preferred going action, with ไป before ดีกว่า. ดีกว่าไป does not reproduce that order. The comparison does not ban every comparative or elliptical context containing these same words.
Giving a comparison when the task requests improvement.
ภาษาไทยของฉันดีกว่าภาษาไทยของฉันดีขึ้นThe task requests ภาษาไทยของฉันดีขึ้น, using ดีขึ้น for my Thai getting better. ภาษาไทยของฉันดีกว่า can be grammatical with an understood comparison, but it does not state the requested improvement reading. Getting better is not necessarily becoming fluent.
Not reproducing the requested should-study-hard advice.
คุณต้องเรียนหนักดีกว่าคุณควรจะเรียนหนักThe task requests คุณควรจะเรียนหนัก with ควร for you should study hard. The alternative คุณต้องเรียนหนักดีกว่า retains ต้อง, expressing must rather than should, and adds a preference expression. This task does not establish a universal moral-versus-situational rule for advice.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand 'ดีกว่า' (had better), you first need to know the basic comparative marker 'กว่า' (more than) and the adjective 'ดี' (good). Since Thai adjectives function like verbs and follow the main verb to modify the action, familiarity with basic word order and adjective usage is essential.
Related Patterns
- Adjective + ขึ้นGetting More
ดีขึ้น describes improvement in the retained task; ดีกว่า can make a comparison with an understood reference. Neither example establishes every possible use.
Level 2 - ควรAdvice with ควร
Compare ควร in the requested should-study-hard advice with ดีกว่า in a preferred-action construction, without an absolute moral-versus-situational split.
Level 1 - ก่อนBefore and First
Read ก่อน in the whole action sequence when a first or before meaning is intended; this relationship does not establish obligatory adjacency or frequency.
Level 2 - นะParticle in Reminders and Requests
นะ is retained in the restaurant suggestion. Its effect depends on the exchange, without a universal softening or politeness guarantee.
Level 1 - ก็ได้Acceptable Options with ก็ได้
Compare ก็ได้ in a complete acceptance context with ดีกว่า in a preference context; an acceptance does not itself prove a rejected first choice.
