ระหว่าง (rá-wàang) is used to describe the gap between two things or the duration of an event. For spatial 'between', use ระหว่าง A กับ B. For temporal 'during', use ระหว่าง [Noun/Activity].

How It Works

1. Spatial Usage ('Between' and 'Among')
When describing the location of something between two distinct points, the structure is:
ระหว่าง [Point A] กับ [Point B]
In this paired pattern, use the word กับ (with/and) to link the two boundaries. This same pattern is used when making a choice between options, such as 'เลือกระหว่างสีแดงกับสีน้ำเงิน' (choose between red and blue). You may also see และ (and) used instead of กับ in writing (e.g., ระหว่าง A และ B). For the paired pattern taught here, กับ links the two boundaries. Additionally, ระหว่าง can also mean 'among' or 'amongst' when referring to relationships or interactions within a group, such as 'ระหว่างเพื่อน' (among friends). For the sense 'amid' or 'surrounded by' a group or environment, another word to compare is ท่ามกลาง (thâam-glaang) instead.

2. Ranges ('Between A and B')
When describing a range of time, dates, or numbers, one clear paired structure is ระหว่าง [A] กับ [B]. For example, 'ระหว่าง 9 โมงกับ 10 โมง' (between 9 o'clock and 10 o'clock). A range may also use ถึง (to) instead, saying 'ระหว่าง 9 โมงถึง 10 โมง'. Compare the paired patterns 'ระหว่าง...กับ...' (between...and...) and 'ตั้งแต่...ถึง...' (from...to...) to see how their linkers name the boundaries.

3. Temporal Usage ('During')
When describing something happening within a duration, the structure is:
ระหว่าง [Noun/Activity]
It can be followed by a noun or an activity expression. One way to name an activity is with การ. For example, 'ระหว่างการประชุม' (during the meeting). A time-specific phrase is ระหว่างนี้ (during this time / meanwhile).

4. Using with Clauses ('While')
For an explicit clause with a subject and verb, a useful model adds ที่ (thîi):
ระหว่างที่ [Subject] [Verb]
Example: 'ระหว่างที่ฉันนอนหลับ' (While I was sleeping).

5. Being in the Process ('In the middle of')
You can combine this with อยู่ to express that something is currently in progress: อยู่ระหว่าง [Noun]. For example, 'อยู่ระหว่างการก่อสร้าง' (in the process of construction).

6. Reading the Whole Phrase
Both ระหว่าง on its own and ในระหว่าง can describe a period or a position. Read the phrase that follows to identify the intended meaning; the added word does not make every sentence formal.

7. Fixed Phrases
One fixed phrase is ระหว่างทาง (rá-wàang thaang), which means 'on the way' or 'mid-journey'. Another important usage is as a modifier meaning 'inter-', such as in ระหว่างประเทศ (rá-wàang bprà-thêet), which means 'international' or 'between countries'.

Common Mistakes

  • Omitting the word 'กับ' (gàp) when linking two items.

  • Confusing 'ระหว่าง' (between/during) with 'ระวัง' (be careful).

    The written words have different meanings: 'ระวัง' means 'be careful', while 'ระหว่าง' means 'between' or 'during'. In this exercise, choose the latter for the phrase meaning 'on the way home'.
