ตอน + Time

Times and Life Stages with ตอน

Level 1

The examples place ตอน before a time of day, a life stage, an age, a clock time, or นั้น. The market example uses ตอนที่ before its clause.

How It Works

1. Time Phrases In Context
ตอนเช้า identifies the morning in the coffee example; ตอนแปดโมงเช้า identifies eight in the morning in the meeting arrangement. โมง here belongs to the clock wording, not a duration of eight hours. The NIU dictionary lists ตอนเช้า as in the morning and ตอนเที่ยง as at noon. Do not replace noon with the whole afternoon.

2. Life Stage And Age
ตอนเด็กๆ provides a childhood context for the description of เขา. ตอนอายุ 20 supplies age twenty, while ฉันอยู่กรุงเทพฯ locates the speaker in Bangkok. Residence can be inferred in a suitable wider context, but อยู่ here does not itself guarantee permanent residence. The natural translations choose a contextual past reading; no separate past marker is present in these bare clauses.

3. The Market Clause
The market example uses ตอนที่ before ฉันไปตลาด, relating that time to the rain clause. NIU gives a separate ตอนที่ example connecting arrival with ongoing sleep. This displayed pattern is not proof that every time clause requires ที่: the retained exercise also contains ตอนฝนตกถนนลื่น.

4. This Time And That Time
Compare ตอนนี้ with ตอนนั้น. The latter identifies that time in the final example; ยังไม่รู้ describes not knowing yet at that reference time. ตอนนั้น alone is not restricted to every past-only use.

5. Two Requested Tasks
The first requests ตอนเช้าผมกินข้าว, with ตอนเช้า as its selected morning phrase. เมื่อเช้าผมกินข้าว can meaningfully refer to this morning; it is not rejected as universally unsuitable for casual conversation. The second requests เวลาฝนตกถนนลื่น with เวลา. The alternative ตอนฝนตกถนนลื่น can describe a contextual time when rain falls and the road is slippery; do not derive a categorical general-habit ban from this exact-form task. Neither rain-and-road example verifies an actual weather or road condition.

Examples (6)

  1. ตอนเช้าผมดื่มกาแฟ

In the morning, I drink coffee.

Word by Word: in the morning | I | drink | coffee

ตอนเช้า supplies the morning context; the bare clause does not specify one date or force a particular tense.

  2. ตอนเด็กๆ เขาซนมาก

During childhood, he was very naughty.

Word by Word: during childhood | he | naughty | very

ตอนเด็กๆ supplies childhood as the time frame. The natural English translation selects a past context; the description is an example assertion.

  3. ตอนอายุ 20 ฉันอยู่กรุงเทพฯ

At age twenty, I was in Bangkok.

Word by Word: at age twenty | I | located | Bangkok

ตอนอายุ 20 identifies the age; อยู่ locates ฉัน in Bangkok. Living there is a possible wider-context reading, not a residence guarantee from the bare clause.

  4. เจอกันตอนแปดโมงเช้านะ

See [you] at eight in the morning.

Word by Word: meet one another | at eight in the morning | [นะ particle]

ตอนแปดโมงเช้า gives a clock time, not eight hours of duration. The natural meeting formula infers the listener; นะ is the displayed particle without an automatic gentle effect.

  5. <grammar expression="ตอนที่">ตอนที่</grammar>ฉันไปตลาด ฝนตก

When I went to the market, it rained.

Word by Word: at the time when | I | go | market | rain falls

The retained ตอนที่ link introduces ฉันไปตลาด in this example. The natural translation selects a past context; neither clause alone proves that all temporal clauses require ที่.

  6. ตอนนั้นฉันยังไม่รู้

At that time, I did not know yet.

Word by Word: at that time | I | not yet | know

ตอนนั้น identifies that reference time and ยังไม่รู้ describes the speaker’s lack of knowledge then. This contextual past translation does not make ตอนนั้น universally past-only.

Common Mistakes

  • Not using ตอนเช้า in the morning phrase requested here.

    เมื่อเช้าผมกินข้าว
    ตอนเช้าผมกินข้าว

Copy ตอนเช้าผมกินข้าว for this task. เมื่อเช้าผมกินข้าว can refer to this morning; its meaningful alternative is preserved without a casual-register ban.

  • Not using เวลา in the time-clause form requested here.

    ตอนฝนตกถนนลื่น
    เวลาฝนตกถนนลื่น

Copy เวลาฝนตกถนนลื่น. The retained ตอนฝนตกถนนลื่น can have a temporal reading in context; the comparison does not establish a universal habit-versus-instance distinction.
