อยู่ (ongoing)

Ongoing Action

Level 1

The particle อยู่ (yùu) comes after the verb phrase in this ongoing-action pattern. It can show an action in progress or a state that persists at the time being discussed.

How It Works

Thai verbs do not change form to mark tense. Context, time expressions, and aspect markers help show how a situation relates to time. The particle อยู่ presents an action or state as ongoing.

1. Placement
In this post-verbal pattern, อยู่ follows the verb phrase, including its object when one is present. This placement differs from English 'am/is/are' before a verb. Its use as a main verb of location is a separate construction.
Pattern: [Subject] + [Verb] + (Object) + อยู่

2. Ongoing Actions vs. States
It can describe actions and persisting postures or states. In the displayed example, 'sit + อยู่' presents the sitting posture as continuing. A state's meaning and the context matter; English does not always translate a Thai state with an '-ing' form.

3. Relationship with กำลัง
You can see อยู่ paired with กำลัง (kam-lang), which goes before the verb. While กำลัง presents an action in progress, อยู่ can present either an action or a state as ongoing. อยู่ can occur without the pre-verbal marker; both markers are not required in every ongoing-action description.

4. Not just the Present
The time comes from context. อยู่ can present a situation as ongoing at a past reference time as well as at the present. A time expression can help identify that time; the particle itself does not mark present tense. It describes how the situation is viewed (ongoing), while context supplies when it occurs.

Examples (5)

  1. กินข้าวอยู่

    I'm eating (rice).

Word by Word: eat rice [ongoing]

This can answer 'What are you doing?' in a casual setting.

  2. รออยู่

    I'm waiting.

    Word by Word: wait [ongoing]

Shows the state of waiting is currently persisting.

  3. ฝนตกอยู่

    It is raining.

Word by Word: rain fall [ongoing]

Used to describe the current weather state.

  4. เขานั่งอยู่

    He is sitting.

Word by Word: he sit [ongoing]

Used for postures to show the person is currently in that position.

  5. ทำอะไรอยู่ครับ

    What are you doing? (polite)

Word by Word: do what [ongoing] [polite particle]

This asks what someone is doing at the time of the question.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting อยู่ before the verb phrase when the intended meaning is 'I am eating.'

    ผมอยู่กินข้าว
    ผมกินข้าวอยู่

For the intended ongoing-eating meaning in this exercise, place อยู่ after the verb phrase. The supplied correction uses Thai post-verbal order rather than copying English 'I am eating.'

  • Using อยู่ when the intended meaning is a change to knowing.

    ผมรู้อยู่
    ผมรู้แล้ว

The supplied correction expresses a change to knowing or being aware. Using อยู่ with 'know' (รู้) can instead present awareness as persisting. That is a different meaning, not a blanket grammatical ban on marking states as ongoing.

Learn This First

To understand the progressive marker 'อยู่', you first need to be comfortable with basic Thai word order (Subject-Verb-Object) so you can correctly place the marker after the verb. It is also helpful to be familiar with the primary meaning of 'อยู่' as 'to be located at', as the progressive sense is an extension of this concept.
