Time Phrases at the Start
The examples begin with yesterday, now, tomorrow or next year. These expressions locate the described situation in time. The tomorrow example has no จะ, while the next-year example includes it; their wording does not establish a universal rule about omitting markers.
How It Works
Read the opening reference. เมื่อวาน locates the non-arrival yesterday; ตอนนี้ locates the ongoing meal now. พรุ่งนี้ introduces the announced trip to Bangkok, and ปีหน้า introduces the planned study of Thai.
The examples preserve the Thai verb forms; the linked จะ appears in the next-year statement but not in the tomorrow statement. This comparison does not make fronting a condition for omitting จะ. Nor does a past time phrase imply completion or the meaning of แล้ว.
For the time-reference vocabulary, compare today, tomorrow and yesterday. The four examples have no ก็; they do not require an added connector or establish a spoken pause.
In the running exercise, request ผมวิ่งสองชั่วโมง, with the two-hour duration after วิ่ง. The alternative with the duration first needs its own context; this exercise does not prohibit all fronted durations.
Examples (4)
- เมื่อวานเขาไม่มา
Yesterday he didn't come.
Word by Word: yesterday | he | not | come
เมื่อวาน places this stated non-arrival yesterday. The translation follows that time reference; it does not add a separate Thai past marker.
- ตอนนี้เรากินข้าวอยู่
Now we are eating.
Word by Word: now | we | eat a meal | [ongoing]
ตอนนี้ gives the current reference and อยู่ marks the ongoing meal. กินข้าว is rendered functionally as eating a meal; rice is its lexical component. The translation selects an inclusive reading of เรา.
- พรุ่งนี้ผมไปกรุงเทพฯ
Tomorrow I am going to Bangkok.
Word by Word: tomorrow | I | go | Bangkok
พรุ่งนี้ supplies the tomorrow reference. This announced trip has no จะ; the native wording shows this particular statement without it, not a general frequency or register rule.
- ปีหน้าเขาจะเรียนภาษาไทย
Next year he will study Thai.
Word by Word: next year | he | will | study | Thai language
ปีหน้า precedes the subject, and จะ precedes เรียน. The example states a future plan; neither its position nor จะ guarantees the plan will happen or makes the statement formal.
Common Mistakes
Missing the requested opening-tomorrow pattern.
ผมไปพรุ่งนี้กรุงเทพฯพรุ่งนี้ผมไปกรุงเทพฯFor this exercise, begin with พรุ่งนี้ and retain ผมไปกรุงเทพฯ as the following trip statement. The alternative does not follow that requested pattern; the exercise does not make a universal claim about all time-expression positions.
Treating the archived annotation as part of the Thai sentence.
เมื่อวานผมไป (feels incomplete to learners)เมื่อวานผมไปBoth archived forms contain the same Thai sentence เมื่อวานผมไป. The parenthetical “feels incomplete to learners” is an English annotation, not a second Thai form or evidence of a defect. In a context supplying the trip, read the sentence as “Yesterday I went”; this task does not require an extra tense marker.
Missing the requested action-then-duration pattern.
สองชั่วโมงผมวิ่งผมวิ่งสองชั่วโมงFor this exercise, request ผมวิ่งสองชั่วโมง: state the running action, then its two-hour duration. สองชั่วโมงผมวิ่ง places the duration first and needs its own discourse context. This task does not assert that durations can never appear at the front.
