At the Time When

Level 2

ตอนที่ introduces the reference time in the displayed examples. The surrounding words show whether the statement concerns an arrival, childhood, a future plan, or ongoing sleep.

How It Works

1. Read the Time Clause
ตอนที่ introduces the time when the following event or situation holds. Compare ตอน and ที่ in the displayed expression. The NIU dictionary gives เขามาถึงที่นี่ตอนที่ผมกำลังนอนอยู่, translated as arriving here at the time when the speaker was sleeping. Read the complete clause rather than restricting ตอนที่ to one tense or contrasting every specific event with every recurring situation.

2. Locate the Reference Time
The arrival example uses แล้ว with his departure. The childhood example supplies a life stage. The Japan example supplies ปีหน้า, next year, and จะ before buying. The sleeping example presents ongoing sleep at the time the phone rings. These contexts explain the selected translations; ตอนที่ alone does not identify past, present, or future time.

3. Compare Complete Constructions
Compare เมื่อ in its own full examples without treating it as universally unacceptable in conversation. The NIU ตอน entry separately includes ผมจะกลับมาตอนสาย ๆ, a return later in the morning. That time-of-day expression is not a rule forbidding every clause after bare ตอน or requiring that it be a casual deletion of ที่.

4. Follow the Requested Form
The first exercise requests ตอนที่ผมไปโรงเรียน ผมเจอเพื่อน for the stated when-I-went-to-school narrative, rather than a when-question. This is not a claim that เมื่อไหร่ can occur only in direct questions. The second requests the exact ตอนที่ construction in ตอนที่ผมกินข้าวเสร็จ ผมจะโทรหาคุณ. The เมื่อ alternative can express a meaningful statement; it does not reproduce the specified form, and the task is not a register-based grammaticality ban.

Examples (4)

When I arrived, he had already left.

Word by Word: at the time when | I | arrive | he | has already left

The arrival sets the reference time, and ออกไปแล้ว presents his departure as already having occurred.

When I was a child, I liked eating ice cream.

Word by Word: at the time when | I | was a child | I | liked eating ice cream

Here, the pattern refers to a specific life stage (childhood).

When [I] go to Japan next year, I will buy a new camera.

Word by Word: at the time when | [I] | go to Japan | next year | I | will buy a new camera

ปีหน้า supplies next year, and จะ introduces the buying plan. The first-clause subject is inferred from the following ผม, not written before ไป.

When he was sleeping, the phone rang.

Word by Word: at the time when | he | is sleeping [ongoing] | telephone | then rings

อยู่ presents ongoing sleep at the reference time, and the main clause describes the phone ringing. It does not mean physically staying in the middle of sleep.

Common Mistakes

  • Not reproducing ตอนที่ for the when-I-went-to-school narrative requested here.

The sentence starting with เมื่อไหร่ does not reproduce that specified time-clause form. This does not prohibit เมื่อไหร่ in every statement or embedded context.

  • Not using the exact ตอนที่ construction requested in this calling plan.

เมื่อผมกินข้าวเสร็จ ผมจะโทรหาคุณ can express a meaningful when-I-finish-eating statement, but does not reproduce the specified ตอนที่ form.
