การ + Action Phrase
การเรียนภาษาไทย names learning Thai as an activity. Read the whole phrase and its place in the sentence.

How It Works

1. Name an Activity
การ combines with the displayed action or process to name it as an activity, as in การวิ่ง, running. Read the complete phrase, not just an English word ending in -ing.

2. Keep the Complete Phrase
In การเรียนภาษาไทย, ภาษาไทย remains the object of เรียน inside the activity phrase. In การออกกำลังกายทุกวันดีต่อสุขภาพ, การออกกำลังกายทุกวัน is the subject. These constructions do not establish that a bare verb phrase can never be a subject.

3. Compare Established Nouns
Compare ความ in ความดี, goodness, and ความรัก, love. การคิด names thinking as an activity, while ความคิด names a thought or idea. Learn each whole noun; the contrast is not a universal ban on การ with every feeling or property word.

4. Read Compounds Separately
การบ้าน, homework, and การเมือง, politics, are established words. Their presence does not prove that every following component is a verb or that all การ compounds have one identical meaning.

5. Being and Having
In the displayed การเป็นหมอ, เป็น expresses being a doctor, not necessarily becoming one. Compare มี within a complete having construction. การหมอ does not reproduce the displayed การเป็นหมอ phrase.

6. Negation and Clauses
การไม่กินเนื้อสัตว์ names not eating meat, with ไม่ inside the action phrase. Compare การที่ in การที่เขาไม่มา..., the fact that he did not come. The clause construction needs its own context; this is not a rule that any named actor automatically requires การที่.

7. Compare the Requested Construction
ฉันชอบว่ายน้ำ and ฉันชอบกินข้าว contain an action after ชอบ without การ. The exercise below requests that direct-verb construction. It does not declare every nominal object after ชอบ ungrammatical or every verb complement a serial verb construction.

8. Separate a Noun from an Ongoing Action
กำลัง marks the ongoing action in เขากำลังวิ่ง. การวิ่ง names running as an activity. Keep these two functions distinct even when an English translation uses -ing.

  1. การออกกำลังกายทุกวันดีต่อสุขภาพ

    Exercising every day is good for health.

    In this sentence, การออกกำลังกายทุกวัน names exercising every day and serves as the subject of ดีต่อสุขภาพ.

  2. เขาสนใจการเรียนภาษาไทย

    He is interested in studying the Thai language.

    Here, การเรียนภาษาไทย is the complete activity phrase following สนใจ; ภาษาไทย remains what is studied.

  3. การเดินทางโดยรถไฟใช้เวลานาน

    Traveling by train takes a long time.

    Word by Word: Act-of-travel by train use time long

    การเดินทางโดยรถไฟ names traveling by train. The sentence then predicates ใช้เวลานาน, takes a long time, of that activity.

  4. การดื่มน้ำมาก ๆ เป็นสิ่งที่ดี

    Drinking a lot of water is a good thing.

    Word by Word: Act-of-drink water a-lot is thing that good

    การดื่มน้ำมาก ๆ names drinking a lot of water. Read มาก ๆ within that complete phrase and เป็นสิ่งที่ดี as what the sentence says about it.

Common Mistakes

  • Using การดี for the requested established noun goodness.

    การดี (gaan dii)
    ความดี (khwaam dii)

    For the displayed meaning goodness, choose ความดี (khwaam dii), with ความ. การดี (gaan dii) does not reproduce that requested noun. This pair does not establish one compulsory prefix for every feeling, property or activity noun.

  • Adding การ when the exercise requests the direct-verb construction after ชอบ.

    ฉันชอบการกินข้าว (chǎn chôop gaan gin khâao)
    ฉันชอบกินข้าว (chǎn chôop gin khâao)

    For this task, express I like eating rice using ชอบ followed directly by กินข้าว: ฉันชอบกินข้าว (chǎn chôop gin khâao). The retained ฉันชอบการกินข้าว (chǎn chôop gaan gin khâao) includes an activity noun instead, so it does not reproduce the requested construction. It is not declared ungrammatical in every context.

  • Confusing 'การ' (noun) with 'กำลัง' (continuous action).

    เขากำลังการวิ่ง (khǎo gam-lang gaan wîng)
    เขากำลังวิ่ง (khǎo gam-lang wîng)

    For he is running now, choose เขากำลังวิ่ง (khǎo gam-lang wîng), with กำลัง before วิ่ง. The retained เขากำลังการวิ่ง (khǎo gam-lang gaan wîng) places the activity noun การวิ่ง in that ongoing-action pattern instead.
