เนื่องจาก

Due to

Level 5

เนื่องจาก introduces a reason or cause, translated as because or due to. Some examples also use จึง to mark the result; others express the result without it.

How It Works

1. Find The Reason
เนื่องจากฝนตกหนัก introduces heavy rain as the reason for postponing a competition. เนื่องจากเขามีประสบการณ์มาก introduces a person’s experience as the reason for choosing him. The stated relationship is part of the sentence, rather than proof that the events happened.

2. Read A Phrase Or A Clause
In เนื่องจากสถานการณ์ปัจจุบัน, the noun phrase meaning the current situation follows เนื่องจาก. In เนื่องจากมีผู้สมัครจำนวนมาก, the clause about many applicants follows เนื่องจาก. Translate the whole reason as because, because of, or due to as the English structure requires.

3. Notice The Result
Three examples use จึง before the result’s main verb. The meeting example has เราจำเป็นต้องยกเลิกการประชุม without จึง. Read จึง when it occurs; do not add a rule that every reason-first formal sentence requires it.

4. Compare The Complete Constructions
เพราะ also introduces reasons. Compare its examples with the complete reason-and-result sentences here. For the displayed lateness question, ทำไม asks why. Changing that word to เนื่องจาก does not form the requested why question.

5. Read Longer Expressions Whole
Compare เนื่องด้วย, สืบเนื่องจาก, and อันเนื่องมาจาก in their own examples. They are related expressions, rather than a fixed ladder that makes one reason more objective than another.

Common Mistakes

  • Ask This Why Question With ทำไม

    เนื่องจากคุณถึงมาสาย
    ทำไมคุณถึงมาสาย

ทำไมคุณถึงมาสาย asks why the listener is late. เนื่องจากคุณถึงมาสาย does not form that requested why question. เนื่องจากอะไร can ask “due to what?” in a different complete construction.

Learn This First

เนื่องจาก is a formal conjunction used to introduce a reason, similar to 'due to' or 'owing to' in English. To use it correctly, learners should already be familiar with the basic causal conjunction 'เพราะ' (because) and understand that Thai distinguishes between casual speech and formal writing.
