Speech And Writing Differ

Level 5

Thai has differences between everyday conversation and formal writing, including choices for words such as “and,” “because,” and “which.” These styles overlap: a speech can be formal, and a written message can be casual.

How It Works

1. Separate Medium From Formality
Speech can be formal or informal, and writing can sound conversational. A report, a speech, and a message to a friend call for different choices. “Spoken” and “written” are not two sealed sets of words.

2. Compare Complete Examples
The market sentence uses กับ for accompaniment and เพราะ for a reason. The policy sentence contains ซึ่ง, และ, and เนื่องจาก. Compare what each word does in its own construction rather than replacing a word only because a text is written.

3. Keep Meaning When Changing Style
A connector that gives a reason is not the same as one that adds a point. A word introducing a relative clause is not a replacement for every other relative marker. In the food example, ที่ introduces the description “that I like.” The project example uses ซึ่ง to introduce information about the project. These complete examples do not license a substitution in every sentence.

4. Read Pronouns And Spelling In Context
The listener, relationship, and purpose help determine a pronoun choice. An informal spelling can represent a pronunciation used in conversation; the school article compares ฉัน with ชั้น and เขา with เค้า. That comparison is not a rule that every speaker must pronounce or write them alike. When a subject or object is unstated, the context must still make the intended referent clear; formal writing does not require an overt pronoun in every clause.

5. Read Negation As A Construction
The appointment example contains มิได้. In that sentence it gives the reading “did not come as scheduled.” Other constructions can express inability or another negative reading. มิได้ alone does not fix past tense or create a legal “shall not.”

6. Choose For The Whole Message
Read the text aloud with its intended audience in mind. One connector does not make an entire sentence formal. Mixing styles can create a deliberate contrast, so a mixed sentence is not automatically a grammar error. Keep the intended meaning, complete construction, and relationship between people in view.

Examples (5)

  1. ผมไปตลาดกับแม่เพราะหิว

I went to the market with mom because I was hungry.

Word by Word: I go market with mom because hungry

กับ marks accompaniment and เพราะ gives the reason in this everyday account. Both words can also appear in writing.

  2. รัฐบาลประกาศนโยบายใหม่ ซึ่งมีผลบังคับใช้และครอบคลุม เนื่องจากวิกฤตการณ์เศรษฐกิจ

The government announced a new policy, which is effective and comprehensive due to the economic crisis.

Word by Word: Government announce policy new which have result force use and cover due to crisis economy

ซึ่ง, และ, and เนื่องจาก fit this formal policy account. Their use does not by itself establish that the stated reason is objectively true.

  3. เขามิได้มาตามนัด

He did not come as scheduled.

Word by Word: he / [formal negation] / come / according to / appointment

มิได้ gives formal or literary negation. This sentence is interpreted as a missed appointment; the word does not itself require past tense in every context.

  4. อาหารที่ฉันชอบคือส้มตำ

The food that I like is papaya salad.

Word by Word: food / that / I / like / is / papaya salad

ที่ introduces the clause “that I like,” describing the food in this sentence.

  5. โครงการดังกล่าว ซึ่งได้รับงบประมาณสนับสนุน...

The aforementioned project, which received budget support...

Word by Word: Project aforementioned which receive budget support

Uses 'ซึ่ง' in a formal context to provide additional information about a specific project.
