ถ้าหาก introduces an if-condition. Read the rest of the sentence to find the request, result, or prediction linked to it.

How It Works

Find the Condition:
ถ้าหากคุณมีข้อสงสัยประการใด introduces the possibility of having questions. The following words ask the reader to contact us. ถ้าหากฝนตกหนัก introduces heavy rain as the condition for canceling the party.

Find the Result:
The meeting example includes ก็ in the following statement. คง adds likelihood there; ถ้าหาก alone does not supply it. The train example uses ถ้าหากว่า before the condition. Urgency comes from the situation and the words about hurrying now, not from ว่า alone.

Read English Should Carefully:
An English translation can say “if you should need help.” That should does not give advice. Do not add ควร merely to copy it. ควร can mean should or ought to in its own context.

Register:
ถ้าหาก appears in different kinds of speech and writing. A sentence about hunger does not become wrong simply because it uses ถ้าหาก.

    ถ้าหาก introduces having questions as the condition. โปรดติดต่อเราทันที asks the reader to contact us immediately; the request comes from those words.

  2. ถ้าหากฝนตกหนัก งานเลี้ยงจะถูกยกเลิก

    In the event that it rains heavily, the party will be canceled.

    Word by Word: If rain fall heavy, party will [passive] cancel.

    Heavy rain is the condition for canceling the party. จะ states the predicted consequence, and ถูก marks the passive construction.

  3. ถ้าหากเขาไม่มาตามนัด เราก็คงต้องเริ่มประชุมกันไปก่อน

    If he should fail to show up for the appointment, we will likely have to start the meeting without him.

    Word by Word: If he not come follow appointment, we then likely must start meeting together go before.

    คง marks likelihood in the result, while ต้อง states necessity. ถ้าหาก introduces the condition; it does not guarantee a polite effect.

  4. ถ้าหากว่าเราไม่รีบไปตอนนี้ เราจะตกรถไฟ

    If it so happens that we don't hurry now, we will miss the train.

    Word by Word: If that we not hurry go now, we will fall train.

    ถ้าหากว่า introduces the condition about not hurrying now. The following statement predicts missing the train.

Common Mistakes

  • Say If You Need Help, Without Adding Advice.

    ถ้าหากคุณควรต้องการความช่วยเหลือ...
    ถ้าหากคุณต้องการความช่วยเหลือ...

    ถ้าหากคุณต้องการความช่วยเหลือ... gives the requested if-you-need-help clause. Adding ควร introduces a should-or-ought-to meaning. It does not reproduce the English conditional should in this task.
