When in Time Expressions and Clauses

Level 2

เมื่อ links a time or situation to the following statement in these examples. เมื่อวานนี้ is read as yesterday; the other examples introduce complete when-clauses. The written form alone does not establish a formal-only register or how often speakers use it.

How It Works

1. Complete When-Clauses
เมื่อถึงเวลา เราจะแจ้งให้ทราบ states that we will inform the listener when the time comes. The listener is inferred in the translation; the sentence is the speaker’s stated plan, not proof that a future notification will occur. เมื่อเปิดประตู หมาก็วิ่งออกไป and เมื่อเขามาถึง การประชุมก็เริ่มขึ้น link the door-opening and arrival situations with the following events.

2. The Displayed ก็
The dog and meeting examples contain ก็ in the second clause. The notification example does not. Read the complete clause rather than requiring ก็ after every เมื่อ or claiming that one event always causes the other.

3. A Time Expression and a Comparison
เมื่อวานนี้ in the doctor example means yesterday. Read it as a complete time expression, not a literal when-yesterday-this phrase or a tense ending attached to the verb. NIU also gives เมื่อ in time references and a conditional example, so a fixed-past-only rule is too narrow. Compare ตอนที่ in its own complete examples; this entry does not establish a universal formality or frequency ranking.

4. The Requested Time Question
The first exercise requests คุณจะไปเมื่อไหร่?, asking when the listener will go with เมื่อไหร่. เมื่อคุณจะไป? does not reproduce that requested standalone question. A เมื่อ clause may occur inside a larger question; this is not a ban on every question containing เมื่อ. NIU also lists เมื่อไร and เมื่อไหร่ in complete time questions, without establishing a register hierarchy here.

5. The Requested Childhood Phrase
The second task explicitly requests ตอนฉันเป็นเด็ก... as the opening phrase. เมื่อฉันเป็นเด็ก... is also a meaningful when-I-was-a-child phrase, but does not reproduce the requested ตอน form. The task does not declare it grammatically invalid or prohibit เมื่อ in personal history or casual speech.

Examples (4)

  1. เมื่อวานนี้ฉันไปหาหมอ

Yesterday I went to see the doctor.

Word by Word: เมื่อวานนี้ [yesterday] | I | go to see doctor

The complete time expression เมื่อวานนี้ locates the doctor visit yesterday. It does not establish a register-frequency rule, and ไปหา is read as going to see or visit here.

  2. เมื่อถึงเวลา เราจะแจ้งให้ทราบ

When the time comes, we will inform [you].

Word by Word: when | time comes | we | will notify [listener inferred]

The speaker states a plan to notify the listener when the time comes. The listener is inferred, and this example contains no ก็. The wording does not prove that the future event will occur or establish a formal-only use.

  3. เมื่อเปิดประตู หมาก็วิ่งออกไป

When the door was opened, the dog ran out.

Word by Word: when | open door [subject unexpressed] | dog | then | run out away

The opening action has no expressed subject; the passive English translation is a contextual rendering. The following dog clause contains ก็. Past narration is the selected translation context, not tense inflection on เมื่อ or a guarantee of an immediate causal result.

  4. เมื่อเขามาถึง การประชุมก็เริ่มขึ้น

When he arrived, the meeting began.

Word by Word: when | he arrives | meeting | then | begins

Read มาถึง as arriving and เริ่มขึ้น as beginning in the complete sequence. The selected past narration does not establish a fixed tense, an obligatory formal register, or zero delay between events.

Common Mistakes

  • Not reproducing the requested standalone time question.

    เมื่อคุณจะไป?
    คุณจะไปเมื่อไหร่?

This task requests คุณจะไปเมื่อไหร่? with เมื่อไหร่ asking when. เมื่อคุณจะไป? does not reproduce that complete standalone time question. This does not ban every question containing a เมื่อ clause.

  • Not reproducing the requested ตอน childhood phrase.

    เมื่อฉันเป็นเด็ก...
    ตอนฉันเป็นเด็ก...

This exercise explicitly requests ตอนฉันเป็นเด็ก.... เมื่อฉันเป็นเด็ก... is a meaningful alternative phrase, but does not use the requested ตอน. No grammatical invalidity, conversational ban, or naturalness ranking is established.

Learn This First

To understand เมื่อ, you should already be familiar with how Thai structures time clauses using the more common marker ตอนที่. Since เมื่อ is a formal variant, knowing the basic question word for time (เมื่อไหร่) and the general rule that time-related phrases usually come at the start of a sentence (time word fronting) provides the necessary foundation.
