ก่อน

Before and First

Level 2

ก่อน (kòrn) relates something to an earlier point or gives an action priority. Its meaning depends on the complete phrase: before an event, a prior time or item, or doing something first.

How It Works

1. Before an Event or Time
In ก่อน + event or time, the following phrase supplies the later reference point. Examples are ก่อนอาหาร (before a meal), ก่อนนอน (before sleeping), ก่อนเที่ยง (before noon), and ก่อนวันจันทร์ (before Monday).

2. Before an Action
ก่อนจะ... can introduce the action that comes later, as in ก่อนจะกินข้าว. A clause can also name its subject: ก่อนที่เขาจะไป or ก่อนเขาจะไป means before he goes. หลังจาก marks the after relation. In either construction, identify the event serving as the time boundary.

3. Earlier Times
สองวันก่อน can mean two days ago, or two days before a reference point supplied by the context. เมื่ออาทิตย์ก่อน means last week and เมื่อเดือนก่อน means last month. ที่แล้ว identifies a previous time, as in เดือนที่แล้ว (last month). For สามปีก่อน or สามปีที่แล้ว, read the complete sentence to identify the reference time. The linked ที่แล้ว entry teaches แล้ว; the whole ที่แล้ว expression has its own time use.

4. A Previous Item or Occasion
In แฟนคนก่อน, ก่อน identifies a previous partner; in ครั้งก่อน, it identifies a previous occasion. The preceding noun and classifier tell you which series or occasion is being discussed.

5. Doing Something First
After an action, ก่อน can give it priority: กินก่อน means eat first in the intended sequence. มาก่อน can describe coming before someone or something else; that relative order does not by itself say whether anyone was early for an appointment. In ฉันไปก่อนนะ, the speaker can announce leaving ahead of the others; I am leaving now is a contextual farewell rendering. The linked ซะก่อน construction also places an action first, as in กินข้าวซะก่อน. Read any requirement from the whole sentence; ก่อน alone does not make an earlier action mandatory.

6. Formerly
เมื่อก่อน and แต่ก่อน can set a past-time context. เมื่อก่อนผมเป็นครู means formerly I was a teacher. ก่อนผมเป็นครู can instead introduce before I was a teacher, with another event understood or supplied. Choose the phrase that matches the intended time relationship.

7. Longer Time Expressions
ก่อนหน้านี้ relates something to an earlier time before this, and ก่อนอื่น introduces first of all. เมื่อวันก่อน means the other day, an unspecified past day. For the explicit intended meaning yesterday, use เมื่อวาน.

8. Prior Experience
In ฉันไม่เคยมาที่นี่มาก่อน, มาก่อน follows the action and place phrase and contributes the prior-experience reading. The linked เคย and ไม่เคย entries explain the experience contrast. The supplied sentence says that the speaker has never come here before.

Examples (6)

  1. ก่อนนอน ฉันชอบอ่านหนังสือ

Before sleeping, I like to read books.

Word by Word: Before sleep, I like read book.

This shows the simplest use of ก่อน followed directly by a verb to mean 'before doing [action]'. It can also be used directly before specific times, like ก่อนเที่ยง (before noon).

  2. สองวันก่อน ฉันไปหาหมอ

Two days ago, I went to see the doctor.

Word by Word: Two day before, I go find doctor.

สองวันก่อน locates the visit two days earlier. Ago is the contextual English rendering when the reference point is now; before a different stated past point requires that wider context.

  3. ครั้งก่อน อาหารอร่อยกว่านี้

The previous time, the food was more delicious than this.

Word by Word: Time before, food delicious more than this.

When following a classifier like ครั้ง (time/occurrence), ก่อน means 'previous' or 'the one before'.

  4. ก่อนจะกินข้าว ต้องล้างมือก่อน

Before eating, you must wash your hands first.

Word by Word: Before will eat rice, must wash hand first.

ก่อนจะกินข้าว supplies the later eating event, and ล้างมือก่อน gives washing the hands priority. The requirement is expressed by ต้อง; it is not an automatic meaning of ก่อน alone.

  5. ฉันไปก่อนนะ

I'm leaving now. (A farewell in this context.)

Word by Word: I go first (softener).

ฉันไปก่อนนะ can announce that the speaker is leaving ahead of others. The English farewell rendering comes from that situation.

  6. ฉันไม่เคยมาที่นี่มาก่อน

I have never been here before.

Word by Word: I not ever come at here come before.

ไม่เคย negates prior experience, while มาที่นี่ names coming here. The final มาก่อน contributes before in this supplied experience sentence.

Common Mistakes

  • Distinguishing eat first from before eating.

    ผมจะก่อนกิน
    ผมจะกินก่อน

For the intended I will eat first, ผมจะกินก่อน places ก่อน after กิน. ก่อนกิน instead means before eating in a larger construction. ผมจะก่อนกิน is not the standard ordering for the intended eat-first statement.

  • Omitting the tone mark in เมื่อก่อน.

    เมื่อกอนผมเป็นครู
    เมื่อก่อนผมเป็นครู

For the intended formerly I was a teacher, write เมื่อก่อนผมเป็นครู. The incorrect spelling เมื่อกอนผมเป็นครู omits ่ from ก่อน. Add the tone mark to write the standard form เมื่อก่อน.

  • Assuming วันก่อน means 'yesterday'.

    วันก่อนผมไปตลาด (meaning yesterday)
    เมื่อวานผมไปตลาด

For the explicit intended meaning yesterday, use เมื่อวาน. เมื่อวันก่อน refers to the other day, an unspecified past day. วันก่อน does not by itself specify exactly yesterday; choose the time expression that matches the intended meaning.
