Drawing a Conclusion

Level 5Sounds Like dakle; zato; stoga

In Serbian grammar, conclusive clauses (закључне реченице) express that one proposition naturally follows as an outcome or inference of another. In standard normative grammar, дакле, зато, and стога are classified as conclusive coordinating conjunctions (закључни напоредни везници), though modern syntax often describes them as connective adverbs due to their semantic and syntactic flexibility. Each has a specific logical role: дакле marks an epistemic deduction ('therefore', 'so then'), зато marks real-world cause and effect ('that's why'), and стога conveys a formal, objective consequence ('hence').

How It Works

To build fluency in connecting complex thoughts, learners must become confident with the logical nuances, syntactic constraints, and punctuation rules governing conclusive connectors.

1. Logical Distinction: Deduction vs. Cause
• Дакле represents an inferential step in the speaker's mind. It answers the question: 'What deduction can be drawn from these facts?' (e.g., Сви људи греше; он је човек; дакле, и он греши). Replacing зато with дакле in a direct factual cause-and-effect relationship produces awkward, unnatural phrasing.
• Зато marks the factual or practical consequence of an event ('that is why'). Unlike mental deductions, it focuses on the outcome produced by a cause (e.g., Падала је киша, зато нисмо изашли).
• Стога expresses the same causal consequence as зато, but belongs to formal, literary, or journalistic registers. Parallel to зато што, formal prose can also use стога што to express causal subordinating clauses.

2. Syntactic Behavior and Mobility
Although traditionally grouped together as conclusive coordinating connectors, these words behave differently within clause structure:
• Дакле functions as a modal connector or parenthetical word. It can float flexibly inside the sentence and be set off by commas (e.g., Морамо, дакле, отићи — 'We must, therefore, leave'). It can also stand alone as a discourse particle meaning 'so' or 'in summary'.
• Зато and стога are pronominal adverbs that integrate syntactically into the predicate structure. While they frequently appear clause-initially (or preceded by coordinators like па зато, и зато, и стога), they are by no means restricted to clause boundaries: they routinely occur mid-clause as integrated sentence adverbials without commas (e.g., Ми смо зато морали да одемо; За њу се стога може рећи да је најбоља). Crucially, unlike дакле, they cannot function as isolated, comma-bracketed parenthetical insertions (*Морамо, зато, отићи is ungrammatical).

3. Punctuation Rules and Asymmetry
• When connecting two clauses within a compound sentence, a comma precedes the conclusive connector (e.g., Радио је вредно, зато је успео).
• At the start of a sentence, there is a clear punctuation asymmetry: sentence-initial Дакле functioning as an introductory discourse marker takes a comma (Дакле, шта сте одлучили?), whereas sentence-initial Зато and Стога are directly integrated into the sentence predicate and are not followed by a comma (Зато морамо пазити; Стога се предлаже измена закона).

4. Common Traps to Avoid
• Do not confuse connective зато ('that's why') with the prepositional phrase за то ('for that', e.g., Немам времена за то).
• Do not confuse consequence-introducing зато with cause-introducing зато што ('because').
• Never split стога into *с тога* when expressing consequence.

Examples (5)

  1. Светла су погашена и врата су закључана, дакле, никога нема код куће.

The lights are off and the door is locked; therefore, nobody is home.

Word by Word: Lights are turned-off and door is locked, therefore, no-one not-is at house.

Uses 'дакле' to mark a logical inference drawn from observable evidence rather than a physical cause.

  2. Путеви су били потпуно залеђени, зато смо одложили путовање.

The roads were completely iced over; that is why we postponed the trip.

Word by Word: Roads were entirely frozen, that-is-why are-we postponed trip.

Uses 'зато' to express a direct, practical cause-and-effect consequence in standard register.

  3. Оптужени није предочио нове доказе, стога је суд одбацио његову жалбу.

The defendant presented no new evidence; hence, the court dismissed his appeal.

Word by Word: Defendant not-did present new evidence, hence has court rejected his appeal.

Uses 'стога' in formal judicial prose to state the objective outcome of a prior fact.

  4. Ми морамо, дакле, пронаћи друго решење пре сутрашњег састанка.

We must, therefore, find another solution before tomorrow's meeting.

Word by Word: We must, therefore, find second solution before tomorrow's meeting.

Demonstrates the syntactic mobility of 'дакле' positioned parenthetically within the clause, flanked by commas.

  5. Нисмо на време резервисали карте, па зато нисмо могли да уђемо.

We didn't reserve tickets in time, and that's why we couldn't get in.

Word by Word: Not-did-we on time reserve tickets, and so not-did-we can that enter.

Shows 'зато' combining naturally with the coordinating conjunction 'па' to emphasize consequence.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing consequence 'зато' with causal 'зато што'

Нисам дошао зато сам био болестан.
Нисам дошао зато што сам био болестан.

Omitting 'што' distorts the syntax. Use 'зато што' (or formal 'стога што') to introduce a cause ('because I was sick'). 'Зато' on its own introduces the consequence or result ('Био сам болестан, зато нисам дошао').

  • Confusing connective 'зато' with prepositional 'за то'

    Нисам чуо зато питање.
    Нисам чуо за то питање.

Write 'за то' as two separate words when it consists of the preposition 'за' followed by the demonstrative pronoun 'то' ('for that / about that'). Use the single word 'зато' exclusively when meaning 'therefore' or 'that is why'.

  • Writing connective 'стога' as two words

Није било доказа, с тога је пуштен.
Није било доказа, стога је пуштен.

The conclusive connector is always the single merged word 'стога'. The two-word sequence 'с тога' is strictly a literal preposition + demonstrative pronoun ('off that / from that', e.g., 'Пао је с тога дрвета').

Learn This First

To learn conclusion markers like 'дакле', 'зато', and 'стога', learners must already understand how cause and effect are connected in Serbian using foundational causal connectors ('јер', 'зато што', 'зато') and consequence clauses ('тако да').
