Introducing Things

Level 1Sounds Like ovo ǰe; to ǰe; ono ǰe

Serbian uses a three-way spatial distinction to introduce and point out objects or people: ово је ('this right here by me'), то је ('that near you' or neutral 'it/that'), and оно је ('that over there'). The pronoun remains fixed in the neuter singular regardless of the noun's gender.

How It Works

In Serbian, introducing, pointing out, or naming an object or person uses an equational copular structure corresponding to English 'this is', 'that is', or 'it is'. Serbian has nouns without articles, so equational sentences simply pair a demonstrative pronoun with the copula present forms of be and the predicate noun.

1. Three-Way Spatial and Contextual Deixis
Unlike English's binary 'this/that', Serbian distinguishes three relative positions:

  • Ово је: Close to the speaker ('this here').
  • То је: Close to the listener, or functioning as the general conversational default for items, facts, or topics just mentioned ('that' or 'it').
  • Оно је: Distant from both the speaker and listener ('that over there').

2. Invariant Neuter Singular Form
When pointing out or identifying what something is, the demonstrative pronoun remains in the neuter singular (ово, то, оно). It does not change gender to agree with the noun being introduced:

  • Ово је ауто. (Masculine) — This is a car.
  • Ово је књига. (Feminine) — This is a book.
  • Ово је село. (Neuter) — This is a village.

3. Verb Agreement in Number and Person
While the demonstrative stays invariant, the verb agrees with the predicate complement. For plural nouns, change singular је to plural су:

  • Ово су књиге. — These are books.
  • То су моји пријатељи. — Those are my friends.

When identifying a person using a personal pronoun, the verb agrees in person with that pronoun:

  • То сам ја. — That is me / It's me.
  • То си ти. — That is you.
  • То смо ми. — That is us.

4. Word Order, Questions, and Negation
In basic affirmative statements, the clitic verb је immediately follows the demonstrative pronoun (Ово је стан). In standard questions, word order naturally changes:

  • Шта је ово? — What is this?
  • Да ли је ово твоја чаша? — Is this your glass?

In negative statements, use the stressed negative forms није / нису:

  • То није мој проблем. — That is not my problem.
  • Ово нису моји кључеви. — These are not my keys.

Examples (5)

  1. Ово је мој пријатељ Марко.

    This is my friend Marko.

Word by Word: This is my friend Marko.

The speaker introduces someone standing right next to them using 'ово је'.

  2. То је одлична идеја.

    That is a great idea.

Word by Word: That is great idea.

'То је' is used here as the neutral discourse pronoun referring back to an idea just mentioned.

  3. Оно је наша стара школа.

That over there is our old school.

Word by Word: That (yonder) is our old school.

'Оно је' indicates a location distant from both the speaker and the listener.

  4. Ово је моја соба.

    This is my room.

Word by Word: This is my room.

Demonstrates gender invariance: 'ово' remains neuter singular even though 'соба' is feminine.

  5. То су моје књиге.

    Those are my books.

Word by Word: That are my books.

With a plural noun, the demonstrative stays 'то' while the copula changes to plural 'су'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the gendered "ова" to introduce a thing.

    Different MeaningОва је моја кућа.
    Ово је моја кућа.

"Ова је моја кућа" is correct when you point to one house among several ("this one"). When you just introduce or identify something, the neutral "ово" is the usual form.

  • Omitting the copula verb 'је'.

    Ово моја школа.
    Ово је моја школа.

Unlike Russian, standard Serbian requires the present copula 'је' in declarative identifying sentences.

  • Using 'оно је' for abstract or non-remote references to English 'that'.

    Оно је тачно.
    То је тачно.

'Оно је' is strictly reserved for things physically or temporally distant. For conversational points, statements, or general thoughts, standard Serbian uses 'то је'.
