зато / због тога / због + Genitive
Expressing a Cause
Expressing cause in Serbian depends on whether you attach a noun or connect clauses:
• због + генитив = 'because of [noun phrase]'
• због тога = 'because of that / for that reason' (points to a previous statement)
• зато = 'therefore / that's why' (introduces the consequence)
How It Works
All three expressions convey reasons, but they operate at distinct syntactic levels:
1. због + генитив (Prepositional Phrase)
• Због is a true preposition governing the genitive case. It designates the cause or reason (узрок), answering the question Зашто? or Због чега?. It can express external events (због кише), internal emotions (због страха, због љубави), or personal actions (због грешке). Note the key contrast in Serbian: због denotes cause (looking backward to why something happened), whereas ради denotes purpose or intention (looking forward to a goal).
• Examples: због кише (because of the rain), због посла (because of work).
• Important constraint: Због cannot be followed immediately by a finite verb. To link a full verb clause, you must use због тога што or conjunctions like јер / зато што.
2. због тога (Anaphoric Adverbial Link)
• Literally 'because of that' (preposition због + genitive neuter singular pronoun тога).
• It refers back to a previously mentioned situation or fact and introduces the consequence in the next clause or sentence.
• Stylistically neutral to formal, very common in written and spoken Serbian.
3. зато (Connecting Adverb)
• Functions like English 'therefore' or 'that is why'.
• It connects an established fact to its consequence (Cause → зато → Result).
• Do not confuse standalone зато ('therefore') with the compound conjunction зато што ('because'). Standalone зато looks forward to the result, whereas зато што introduces the reason.
Examples (5)
- Лет је отказан због густе магле.
The flight was canceled due to thick fog.
Word by Word: Flight is canceled because-of thick fog.
Here 'због' takes the genitive noun phrase 'густе магле' to state the external cause of the cancellation.
- Није на време учио за испит, зато га није положио.
He didn't study for the exam on time; that's why he didn't pass it.
Word by Word: Not on time studied for exam, therefore it not passed.
'Зато' introduces the consequence (he didn't pass) resulting from the preceding clause (he didn't study).
- Путеви су били залеђени и због тога смо возили веома опрезно.
The roads were icy, and for that reason we drove very cautiously.
Word by Word: Roads were icy and because-of that were-driving very cautiously.
'Због тога' connects back to the icy condition of the roads, introducing the resulting cautious driving.
- Нисам дошао на тренинг због прехладе.
I did not come to training because of a cold.
Word by Word: Not came to training because-of cold.
'Због' is followed by the feminine genitive noun 'прехладе' (cause of absence).
- Било је касно, зато смо узели такси.
It was late, so we took a taxi.
Word by Word: It-was late, therefore took taxi.
Standalone 'зато' shows that taking a taxi was the direct consequence of the late hour.
Common Mistakes
Using 'због' directly in front of a conjugated verb clause.
Касним због сам се успавао.Касним јер сам се успавао.'Због' is a preposition and only attaches to nouns or pronouns. With a full clause, use 'јер', 'зато што', or 'због тога што'.
Using standalone 'зато' to mean 'because' instead of 'therefore'.
Остао сам код куће зато је падала киша.Остао сам код куће зато што је падала киша.Standalone "зато" means "that's why / therefore" and introduces the result. To introduce a cause clause, use "зато што" or "јер".
Using the nominative case instead of the genitive after 'због'.
Све је отказано због лоше време.Све је отказано због лошег времена.'Због' strictly governs the genitive case, so 'лоше време' must decline to 'лошег времена'.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn expressing cause with linking adverbs ('зато', 'због тога') versus prepositional phrases ('због + генитив'), learners need to understand standard causal conjunctions ('јер', 'зато што'), how prepositions govern the genitive case, and how demonstrative pronouns decline into genitive forms like 'тога'.
- јер / зато штоGiving a Reason
Provides the foundational concept of expressing reasons and causes in Serbian clauses.
Level 2 - Genitive With Prepositions
Crucial for using the prepositional construction 'због + генитив' accurately with nouns.
Level 2 - Declining This That and Possessives
Necessary to understand the form 'тога' (genitive of 'то') in 'због тога'.
