при наличии/отсутствии + Genitive
Formal Condition of Presence or Absence
При наличии/отсутствии + Genitive is a high-level formal construction meaning 'In the presence/absence of' or 'If [X] exists/does not exist.' It is used exclusively in official, legal, and technical contexts.
How It Works
This construction is a hallmark of the Russian official-business style (официально-деловой стиль).
1. Structural Breakdown:
- При (Preposition)
- наличии / отсутствии (Nouns in the Prepositional case, ending in -ии. Literally: наличие = presence/availability, отсутствие = absence/lack. This literal meaning explains why the following noun must be in the Genitive case, answering "in the presence of what?")
- [Noun] (The subject of the condition in the Genitive case)
Translation Note: In natural English, this noun-based construction is almost always translated as a conditional clause (e.g., 'If there is...', 'If you have...', 'In case of...', 'Provided that...').
2. Expressing the Possessor:
To specify who has or lacks the item (e.g., 'If you have...'), you can insert the possessor using у + Genitive. While the most natural word order places the possessor directly after the prepositional phrase (e.g., При наличии у вас вопросов... — If you have questions), it is not a strict rule, and the possessor can also follow the noun (e.g., При наличии документов у клиента...). This works exactly the same way for absence (e.g., При отсутствии у клиента документов... — If the client lacks documents).
Note on Stacked Genitives: Because the pattern requires the Genitive case for the object, and the possessor also uses the Genitive case, you will often encounter two Genitives in a row (e.g., При наличии у клиента [Gen] документов [Gen]). This stacking is correct and standard for this construction.
3. Usage and Nuance:
Unlike the neutral есть or нет, this pattern implies a procedural or legal requirement. It is used when the existence of a factor is a formal prerequisite. This pattern frequently governs abstract or uncountable nouns (e.g., grounds, consent, technical possibility), but it is also standard with concrete objects when they act as formal prerequisites (e.g., a passport, a ticket, or a document). A common formal synonym is в случае наличия.
4. Punctuation (Обособление):
In strict official-business writing, phrases starting with при наличии/отсутствии are usually not set off by commas. Commas are the exception rather than the rule. They are only used if the phrase is heavily expanded, interrupts the core of the sentence (e.g., between the subject and the predicate), or requires special logical emphasis.
5. Register:
This is highly formal. You will see it in contracts, user manuals, and laws. Because of this official-business style, the main clause of the sentence typically features formal vocabulary, passive voice, or formal imperatives. Using it in casual conversation would sound unnaturally robotic. In speech, Russians prefer using если есть (if there is) or если (if) for positive conditions. For the negative counterpart при отсутствии (in the absence of / if there is no), casual equivalents include если нет plus the Genitive case, or без (without) plus the Genitive case.
6. Distinction from 'В наличии':
Do not confuse при наличии with в наличии. While в наличии simply states that something is 'in stock' or 'available' right now, при наличии sets a condition for a future or hypothetical result.

- При наличии медицинских показаний пациент направляется на обследование.
If medical grounds exist, the patient is referred for an examination.

- При отсутствии письменного согласия сторон договор считается недействительным.
In the absence of written consent from the parties, the contract is considered invalid.
Word by Word: At absence of written consent of parties contract is considered invalid.
A typical legal clause. 'Согласия' is the genitive singular object of 'отсутствии'.
- Выдача пропуска производится при наличии паспорта.
The pass is issued upon presentation of a passport (literally: if a passport is present).
Word by Word: Issuance of pass is produced at presence of passport.
Commonly seen on signs in official buildings. 'Паспорта' is genitive singular.
- При наличии технической возможности мы обновим систему.
If there is a technical possibility, we will update the system.
Word by Word: At presence of technical possibility we will update system.
Used in technical support or service agreements.
Common Mistakes
Using the Nominative case for the object.
При наличии паспорт...При наличии паспорта...The nouns 'наличии' and 'отсутствии' always require the following noun to be in the Genitive case.
Incorrect spelling of the ending (using -е or -и instead of -ии).
При наличие возможности...При наличии возможности...Because these nouns follow the preposition 'при', they must be in the Prepositional case. For neuter nouns ending in -ие, the Prepositional ending is -ии.
Using the phrase in casual conversation.
Я приду к тебе при наличии времени.Я приду к тебе, если будет время.While grammatically correct, using this formal pattern with friends sounds like you are reading a legal contract. Use 'если' for daily life.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn this formal conditional pattern, learners must first understand the preposition 'при' in its circumstantial sense. They also need a solid grasp of the genitive case, specifically how it is used to denote existence or absence (related to 'есть' and 'нет') and how multiple nouns in the genitive can be linked together in formal or legalistic phrasing.
- при + PrepositionalCircumstantial При with Nominalization
The preposition 'при' is the core marker of this construction, establishing the circumstantial or conditional context.
Level 5 - нет / не было / не будет + GenitiveGenitive with Absence and Negated Existence
Understanding the concept of existential absence (наличие vs. отсутствие) and its link to the genitive case is fundamental to this pattern.
Level 3 - Stacked genitives
This formal pattern often involves a sequence of nouns in the genitive case (e.g., при наличии оснований), requiring familiarity with stacked genitive constructions.
