Verbal Nouns in -ние, -ение, And -тие

Level 4Sounds Like otglagolʹnoe suŝestvitelʹnoe na -nie/-enie/-tie

Verbal nouns (отглагольные существительные) turn actions into things. They are always neuter and are used to describe processes (the act of doing) or results (the thing produced). They are common in formal, academic, and official Russian.

How It Works

Verbal nouns allow you to treat an entire action as a single noun. This is essential for formal writing and complex sentence structures. Note that all these nouns are neuter gender, and any reflexive particles (-ся/-сь) are dropped when forming the noun.

1. Formation Rules:

  • -ение (stress): For verbs ending in -ить, the stress of the verbal noun often falls on the suffix -ение (e.g., улучшить → улучшение, расширить → расширение, изучить → изучение). There are some exceptions where the stress remains on the root, such as обеспечение and намерение. Crucial note on aspectual pairs: For verb pairs, the verbal noun is often formed from the perfective -ить stem rather than the imperfective -ать/-ять stem (e.g., улучшать/улучшить forms улучшение, not *улучшание). However, there are common exceptions formed from the imperfective -ать stem, such as напоминание.
  • -ние: Used for verbs ending in -ать, most verbs in -ять, and many in -еть. The 'а', 'я', or 'е' from the infinitive stem is retained before the suffix. The stress remains on the same syllable as in the infinitive (e.g., желание, плавание, требование). Verbs ending in -овать / -евать transform into -ование / -евание (e.g., использовать → использование). An important exception is читать, which drops its stem vowel and takes -ение to become чтение. Verbs like петь simply add -ние to the root (пение).
  • -ение (mutations): Used for verbs ending in -ить and -чь. This suffix often causes consonant mutations (д→жд or д→ж, т→щ/ч, з→ж, с→ш) and labial mutations (б→бл, п→пл, в→вл, м→мл, ф→фл). Verbs in -чь undergo velar mutations (г→ж, к→ч). Examples: суждение (judgment, д→жд), опережение (anticipation, д→ж), кручение (twisting, т→ч), оформление (processing / design, м→мл), достижение (achievement, from достичь), привлечение (attraction, from привлечь).
  • -тие: Used for verbs with stems ending in -ыть, and for -уть verbs it is mostly restricted to monosyllabic roots. For polysyllabic verbs ending in -нуть, the suffix -овение is typically used instead (e.g., исчезнуть → исчезновение, столкнуться → столкновение). It is also used for verbs with the root -ня- (like понять) or взять, and monosyllabic verbs ending in -ить (and their prefixed forms, including the root -быть). Examples: открытие (opening), взятие (taking), понятие (concept), развитие (development), событие (event).

Note: You may also see the suffix -нье. While -ние is formal and often denotes a process, -нье is more colloquial and often denotes a tangible result. In some cases, this has led to lexical splits where they are entirely different words: варение (the process of boiling) vs варенье (jam), or печение (the process of baking) vs печенье (cookie/biscuit). Importantly, nouns ending in -ие take the special ending -и in the Prepositional case (e.g., о решении), whereas nouns in -ье take the standard -е ending (e.g., о варенье). Also, keep in mind that not all verbs form nouns this way; many use a zero suffix (e.g., бегать → бег, вздыхать → вздох) or other suffixes (e.g., ходить → ходьба).

2. Aspect and Meaning:
Many verbal nouns are bi-aspectual and can denote either the process or the result depending on the context. For example, решение serves both the imperfective решать (a continuous process) and the perfective решить (a completed result). When denoting a process, they are typically uncountable, but when denoting a result or event, they can easily take plural forms (e.g., решения).

3. Grammar and Case:
When a verb becomes a noun, its direct object moves to the Genitive case. The subject (the doer) also takes the Genitive case by default (e.g., появление отца — the appearance of the father). However, if both an object and a subject are present, the subject shifts to the Instrumental case to avoid confusion: изучение русского языка студентом (the study of the Russian language by the student). Verbal nouns are frequently paired with prepositions of time and purpose in formal Russian, most notably при (upon/during), после (after), and для (for the purpose of).

Examples (4)

  1. Чтение книг помогает расширить кругозор.

Reading books helps to broaden one's horizons.

Word by Word: Reading [of] books helps to broaden horizon.

Here, 'чтение' (from читать) is the subject, and 'книг' is in the genitive plural.

  2. Мы ждём решения комиссии.

We are waiting for the commission's decision.

Word by Word: We wait [for] decision [of] commission.

'Решение' (from решить) represents the result of the action rather than the process.

  3. После открытия выставки был фуршет.

After the opening of the exhibition, there was a reception.

Word by Word: After opening [of] exhibition was reception.

'Открытие' (from открыть) uses the -тие suffix common for verbs ending in -ыть.

  4. Обсуждение проекта заняло три часа.

The discussion of the project took three hours.

Word by Word: Discussion [of] project took three hours.

'Обсуждение' shows the д → жд mutation typical for -ить verbs forming verbal nouns.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Accusative case for the object of the verbal noun.

    изучение грамматику
    изучение грамматики

Nouns cannot govern the Accusative case; you must use the Genitive to show what is being studied.

  • Using -ние for verbs that require -тие.

    открывание Америки
    открытие Америки

While 'открывание' exists for the physical act of opening a lid, 'открытие' is the correct term for a discovery or an event.
