Genitive with Absence and Negated Existence

Level 3Sounds Like net / ne bylo / ne budet + roditelʹnyj

In Russian, when you want to say something is NOT there (negated existence), the noun must switch to the Genitive case. This is used for 'I don't have', 'He isn't here', or 'There is no...'

How It Works

This pattern, often called the Existential Genitive, is the mandatory way to express absence in Russian. It consists of a negative word followed by a noun in the Genitive case.

1. Tense Forms:

  • Present: Use нет (a contraction of 'не' + 'есть').
  • Past: Use не было. This is fixed in the neuter singular.
  • Future: Use не будет. This is fixed in the 3rd person singular.

2. Impersonal Nature:
Unlike standard sentences where the verb agrees with the subject, these sentences are 'subjectless.' The noun is in the Genitive, so it cannot be the grammatical subject. Therefore, the verb stays in a default form (neuter for past, 3rd person for future) regardless of whether the noun is masculine, feminine, or plural.

3. Usage Contexts:

  • Absence: Его нет дома (He is not at home).
  • Non-existence: Здесь нет воды (There is no water here).
  • Possession: У меня нет машины (I don't have a car).

Examples (5)

  1. У меня нет времени.

    I don't have time.

Word by Word: At me there-is-not of-time.

The noun 'время' (time) changes to the genitive 'времени' after 'нет'.

  2. Вчера в магазине не было хлеба.

There was no bread in the store yesterday.

Word by Word: Yesterday in store not was of-bread.

Even though 'хлеб' is masculine, the verb remains 'не было' (neuter) because the bread is absent.

  3. Завтра не будет занятий.

There will be no classes tomorrow.

Word by Word: Tomorrow not will-be of-classes.

The plural noun 'занятия' becomes genitive plural 'занятий' after 'не будет'.

  4. Ивана нет на работе.

    Ivan is not at work.

Word by Word: Of-Ivan there-is-not at work.

Used to indicate a specific person's absence from a location.

  5. Денег не было.

    There was no money.

Word by Word: Of-money not was.

A common way to express a lack of resources in the past.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Nominative case after 'нет'.

    У меня нет машина.
    У меня нет машины.

After 'нет', 'не было', and 'не будет', the noun must always be in the Genitive case.

  • Making the past tense verb agree with the noun's gender.

    Мамы не была дома.
    Мамы не было дома.

In existential negation, the verb is impersonal and must remain in the neuter form 'не было', even if the person absent is feminine.

  • Using 'не есть' for present tense negation.

    Здесь не есть вода.
    Здесь нет воды.

Russian uses the specific word 'нет' to negate existence in the present tense; 'не есть' is not used this way.

Learn This First

To learn expressing absence across all tenses, a learner must first understand the basic present-tense 'нет' construction and the Genitive case. Additionally, they need to be familiar with the past and future forms of the verb 'быть' (to be), as these serve as the auxiliary components for the past and future versions of this construction.
