в + Location
Location with В
The preposition в (in/at) is used to describe a static location. It answers the question Где? (Where?).
How It Works
The preposition в is the most common way to express location in Russian. To become proficient in using it, you must follow these rules:
- Case Requirement: The noun following в must be in the prepositional case. For most singular nouns, this means adding the ending -е (e.g., парк → в парке).
- Ending Exceptions: Not all nouns end in -е. Nouns ending in -ия (Россия → в России), -ие (здание → в здании), and feminine nouns ending in -ь (Сибирь → в Сибири) take the ending -и or -ии.
- Geographical Locations: Use в for most cities, countries, and continents (e.g., в Москве, в России).
- Interiority: It generally emphasizes being inside a boundary or building (e.g., в школе). However, note that some specific institutions and open spaces use на instead (e.g., на почте, на вокзале).
- Phonological Variant (во): If a word starts with a difficult consonant cluster (like в or ф followed by another consonant), в changes to во for easier pronunciation (e.g., во Франции).
- Special Endings: Some masculine nouns take a stressed -у ending instead of -е when used with в to show location (e.g., в лесу, в аэропорту). This is known as the locative variant.
Examples (5)
- Мой друг сейчас в Москве.
My friend is in Moscow right now.
Word by Word: My friend now in Moscow.
Moscow (Москва) changes to the prepositional case ending -е after 'в'.
- Книга лежит в столе.
The book is (lying) in the desk.
Word by Word: Book lies in desk.
Here 'в' emphasizes that the book is inside the drawer or the body of the desk.
- Мы гуляем в парке.
We are walking in the park.
Word by Word: We walk in park.
Even though a park is outdoors, it has defined boundaries, so 'в' is used.
- Она живёт во Франции.
She lives in France.
Word by Word: She lives in France.
The preposition 'в' becomes 'во' for easier pronunciation. Also, nouns ending in -ия like Франция take the ending -ии in the prepositional case.
- Медведь живёт в лесу.
The bear lives in the forest.
Word by Word: Bear lives in forest.
The word 'лес' (forest) is one of the special masculine nouns that takes a stressed -у ending for location.
Common Mistakes
Using the nominative case after 'в'.
Я живу в Москва.Я живу в Москве.Nouns must change their ending to the prepositional case when following 'в' to indicate location.
Confusing location (Where?) with direction (Where to?).
Я иду в школе.Я иду в школу.If you are moving towards a place, you must use the accusative case (в школу). The prepositional case (в школе) is only for staying in one spot.
Using 'в' for events or open surfaces.
Я в концерте.Я на концерте.Russian uses на for events (concerts, lessons) and open surfaces. 'В' is strictly for interior spaces or bounded areas.
