в/на + Prepositional (Location)
Prepositional Location After В and На
The Prepositional case is used to answer the question Где? (Where?). It typically uses the ending -е for most nouns.
How It Works
To express static location in Russian, you must use the Prepositional case. This case is unique because it never appears without a preposition.
1. Choosing the Preposition:
- в: Used for enclosed spaces, buildings, and most geographic areas like cities and countries. Example: в парке (in the park), в Москве (in Moscow).
- на: Used for surfaces, open spaces, and events. Importantly, it is also used for islands (на Кубе), peninsulas (на Камчатке), and certain regions (на Кавказе, на Урале). Example: на столе (on the table), на концерте (at the concert).
2. Basic Endings (Singular):
- Most masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns take the ending -е.
- Nouns ending in -ия, -ие, or -ий take the ending -ии (e.g., в России, в здании).
- Feminine nouns ending in a soft sign (-ь) take the ending -и (e.g., в тетради).
3. Special Locative Ending (-у):
A small group of masculine nouns use a stressed -у ending instead of -е when indicating location after в or на. Common examples include в лесу (in the forest), на полу (on the floor), and в аэропорту (at the airport).
4. Phonetic Variation:
The preposition в becomes во before certain consonant clusters, especially those starting with в or ф followed by another consonant (e.g., во Франции).
Examples (5)
- Я живу в Москве.
I live in Moscow.
Word by Word: I live in Moscow.
Cities use the preposition 'в' and the standard '-е' ending.
- Книга лежит на столе.
The book is lying on the table.
Word by Word: Book lies on table.
Surfaces like a table use 'на' with the standard '-е' ending.
- Мы сейчас на работе.
We are at work now.
Word by Word: We now on work.
'Работа' (work) is a conceptual location that always takes 'на'.
- Она отдыхает в лесу.
She is resting in the forest.
Word by Word: She rests in forest.
'Лес' is one of the special masculine nouns that takes the '-у' ending for location.
- Иван учится в университете.

Word by Word: Ivan studies in university.
Educational institutions usually take 'в' to indicate being inside the building.
Common Mistakes
Using 'в' for events like concerts or lessons.
Я был в концерте.Я был на концерте.When you attend an event (a concert, a lesson, a meeting), Russian uses 'на': был на концерте. 'В' appears when you take part, as in 'выступать в концерте'.
Confusing location (Where?) with destination (Where to?).
Я иду в парке.Я иду в парк.If you are moving towards a place, you must use the Accusative case. Using the Prepositional case with a verb of motion means you are already inside the location, walking around.
Applying the standard '-е' ending to nouns ending in '-ия'.
Я живу в Россие.Я живу в России.Nouns ending in '-ия' (like Россия) must change to '-ии' in the Prepositional case.
