если + Future Tense
Real Condition with Future
In Russian, if a condition refers to the future, you must use the future tense after если (if). This differs from English, which uses the present tense.
How It Works
Unlike English, where we say 'If it rains (present) tomorrow...', Russian requires the future tense in the 'if' clause: 'Если завтра будет (future) дождь...'. The result clause is usually in the future tense (e.g., 'Если завтра будет дождь, я останусь дома'), but it can also be an imperative, or in the present tense if it refers to a scheduled future plan or a firm intention (e.g., '..., я остаюсь дома').
1. Verb Aspects:
You can use both aspects depending on the meaning:
- Use the совершенный вид (perfective future) for single, completed actions (e.g., 'если ты прочитаешь книгу').
- Use the буду + инфинитив (compound imperfective future) for ongoing or repeated actions (e.g., 'если ты будешь заниматься').
2. Using 'быть' with Adjectives and States:
Because English uses the present tense without a future auxiliary (e.g., 'If I am free tomorrow...'), learners frequently try to translate this without a verb in Russian. However, to say 'If I am [adjective/noun]' in the future, you must use the future conjugation of быть (буду, будешь, будет...). For example: 'Если я буду свободен завтра...' (If I am free tomorrow...).
3. The particle 'то':
The word то (then) often introduces the second clause. It is grammatically optional but very common in speech. Note: 'то' can only be used if the 'если' clause starts the sentence (e.g., 'Если..., то...'). If the main clause comes first, 'то' is not used.
4. Temporal Conjunctions:
This future tense rule also applies to other temporal conjunctions referring to future events, such as когда (when), как только (as soon as), and пока (while). Note that to express 'until' in a future context, you must add the negative particle 'не' (пока не + perfective future). Also, while 'если' is used for uncertain conditions ('if it happens'), 'когда' is used for presupposed events ('when it inevitably happens').
5. General Truths:
The future rule only applies to specific future possibilities. If you are expressing a general habit or a universal truth, use the present tense in both clauses (e.g., 'Если идёт дождь, мы сидим дома').
6. Punctuation:
In Russian, a comma must always separate the 'если' clause from the main clause.
7. Real vs. Unreal:
This pattern is for 'real' conditions (things that might actually happen). If you want to talk about hypothetical or impossible situations, you need the сослагательное наклонение (subjunctive mood). This is formed using Если бы + [Past Tense Verb] in the condition and a past tense verb with the particle бы in the result clause. Note that бы is highly mobile and often follows the subject or the first stressed word of the clause, rather than strictly following the verb.
Examples (5)
- Если завтра будет солнце, мы пойдём гулять.
If it is sunny tomorrow, we will go for a walk.
Word by Word: If tomorrow will-be sun, we will-go to-walk.
Notice that 'будет' (will be) is used in the 'if' clause because the sun is expected in the future.
- Если ты прочитаешь эту книгу, я дам тебе другую.
If you read this book, I will give you another one.
Word by Word: If you will-read-through this book, I will-give to-you another.
The perfective 'прочитаешь' indicates a completed action in the future.
- Если вы будете много заниматься, вы всё поймёте.
If you study a lot, you will understand everything.
Word by Word: If you will be-studying much, you all will-understand.
The imperfective 'будете заниматься' is used here for a process of studying.
- Если он не позвонит, то я пойду один.
If he doesn't call, then I will go alone.
Word by Word: If he not will-call, then I will-go alone.
The particle 'то' (then) is used here to emphasize the result.
- Если увидишь его, позвони мне.
If you see him, call me.
Word by Word: If you-will-see him, call to-me.
The result clause does not have to be in the future tense; it can also be an imperative, as shown here with 'позвони'.
Common Mistakes
Using the present tense in the 'if' clause for future events.
Если завтра идёт дождь, мы останемся дома.Если завтра пойдёт дождь, мы останемся дома.In English, we use the present tense after 'if' for future events (e.g., 'If it rains'). In Russian, you must use the future tense in both clauses if the event refers to the future.
Mixing real and hypothetical conditions.
Если будет дождь, я бы остался дома.Если будет дождь, я останусь дома.Do not use the particle 'бы' in a real future condition. 'Бы' is only for hypothetical scenarios.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To form real future conditions in Russian, you must be able to conjugate verbs in the future tense (both imperfective compound future and perfective simple future) and understand how to link two clauses where both actions occur in the future.
- буду + InfinitiveCompound Imperfective Future
The compound future is one of the two ways to form the future tense required in both clauses of this conditional structure.
Level 3 - Perfective aspect for completed result
Perfective future forms are frequently used in real conditions to express specific completed actions that will trigger a result.
Level 2 - Neutral word order
Understanding basic sentence structure is necessary to correctly place the 'если' clause and the main clause.
