Genitive object with verbal nouns
When a verb like изучать (to study) becomes a noun like изучение (studying), its direct object (the thing being studied) moves from the Accusative case to the Genitive case.
How It Works
This pattern is essential for formal, scientific, and journalistic Russian. It allows you to pack complex actions into a single noun phrase.
1. Formation:
When a transitive verb (a verb that takes a direct object) is nominalized, the object shifts to the Genitive. For example:
- читать книгу (to read a book) → чтение книги (reading of the book)
- строить дом (to build a house) → строительство дома (construction of the house)
Exception: Transitive verbs expressing emotion or attitude often shift their object to a prepositional phrase (usually к + Dative) when nominalized. For example: уважать старших (to respect elders) → уважение к старшим (respect for elders), любить искусство → любовь к искусству.
2. Common Suffixes:
Verbal nouns typically end in:
- -ние / -ение / -тие: обсуждение (discussion), открытие (opening).
- -ка: подготовка (preparation), проверка (check).
3. Subjective vs. Objective Genitive:
The Genitive case is used for both objects of transitive verbs and subjects of verbs (both intransitive and transitive, when the direct object is omitted). This can sometimes lead to ambiguity:
- Subjective Genitive: приезд отца (the arrival of the father - intransitive subject) or решение суда (the decision of the court - transitive subject). Here, the father or the court is the one performing the action. This is the Subjective Genitive.
- Objective Genitive: приглашение директора could mean 'the invitation sent by the director' (Subjective) or 'the invitation sent to the director' (Objective).
Context is key. If both the subject and object are present, the object stays Genitive, and the subject moves to the Instrumental case (e.g., изучение языка студентом).
4. Reflexive Verbs:
When a reflexive verb (ending in -ся/-сь) becomes a noun, the suffix is dropped. The noun usually retains the case of the original verb's complement. For example, наслаждаться музыкой (Instrumental) becomes наслаждение музыкой.
5. Non-Accusative Complements:
If the original verb governed a case other than the Accusative, the verbal noun typically retains that case. For example, управлять заводом (Instrumental) remains управление заводом, and сочувствовать другу (Dative) remains сочувствие другу. However, to avoid ambiguity or as a stylistic preference, some constructions may optionally shift to a prepositional phrase, such as сочувствие к другу.
6. Stylistic Note:
While these constructions are vital for formal writing, avoid overusing them in casual speech. Excessive use of verbal nouns is known as канцелярит (bureaucratese). Specifically, avoid нанизывание родительных падежей (Genitive stacking)—chaining more than two or three Genitives in a row (e.g., процесс развития системы управления качеством образования), which makes your Russian sound stiff and unnatural.
Examples (5)
- Изучение иностранного языка требует времени.
Studying a foreign language requires time.
Word by Word: Studying [of] foreign language requires time.
The verb 'изучать' takes the Accusative, but the noun 'изучение' requires the Genitive 'языка'.
- Мы ждём подтверждения заказа.
We are waiting for confirmation of the order.
Word by Word: We wait [for] confirmation [of] order.
The noun 'подтверждение' (from 'подтверждать') takes the Genitive 'заказа'.
- Сокращение штатов началось в понедельник.
The reduction of staff began on Monday.
Word by Word: Reduction [of] staffs began on Monday.
Here, 'штатов' is the Objective Genitive of the noun 'сокращение'.
- Взятие города произошло на рассвете.
The taking of the city occurred at dawn.
Word by Word: Taking [of] city occurred at dawn.
A classic historical/literary example where the city is the object of the 'taking'.
- Подготовка отчёта заняла всю неделю.
Preparation of the report took the whole week.
Word by Word: Preparation [of] report took all week.
The noun 'подготовка' takes the Genitive 'отчёта' as its object.
Common Mistakes
Using the Accusative case after a verbal noun.
чтение книгучтение книгиLearners often use the Accusative because the original verb (читать) takes the Accusative. However, nouns in Russian cannot govern the Accusative case directly.
Creating 'Genitive chains' that are too long.
процесс развития системы управления качествомпроцесс того, как развивается система управления качествомWhile grammatically correct, stacking too many Genitive nouns makes the sentence hard to read. It is better to use a verb or a 'чтобы' clause to break the chain.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand the genitive of the object with verbal nouns, a learner needs to recognize verbal nouns (like 'строительство' from 'строить') and understand that the relationship between the noun and its genitive dependent mirrors the relationship between a verb and its direct object.

Learners must first be able to recognize and form verbal nouns before they can understand how these nouns govern objects.
Level 4 - Accusative direct object
Understanding that the genitive noun represents the direct object of the underlying action requires knowledge of how direct objects function with verbs.
