Genitive of possession or association

Level 2Sounds Like roditelʹnyj prinadležnosti

The Genitive of Possession (родительный принадлежности) connects two nouns to show ownership, parts of a whole, or association. The 'owner' noun follows the 'possessed' noun and changes its ending to the genitive case.

How It Works

The родительный принадлежности is the most common way to express relationships between nouns. It answers the questions чей? (whose?), кого? (of whom?), or чего? (of what?).

1. Word Order:
Unlike English, where we can say 'the brother's car', Russian almost always puts the 'possessed' object first and the 'possessor' second.

  • Машина брата (The brother's car)
  • Центр города (The center of the city)

2. Scope of Meaning:
It is not just for legal ownership. It covers:

  • Strict Possession: дом отца (father's house)
  • Part-to-Whole: крыша дома (the roof of the house)
  • Authorship: книга Чехова (Chekhov's book)
  • Association: житель Москвы (a resident of Moscow)

3. Formation:
The second noun must take genitive endings:

  • Masculine: -а / -я (студент → студента)
  • Feminine: -ы / -и (сестра → сестры)
  • Neuter: -а / -я (окно → окна)

Remember the 7-letter rule: after к, г, х, ж, ч, ш, щ, use -и instead of -ы (e.g., подруга → подруги).

Examples (4)

  1. Это кабинет директора.

    This is the director's office.

Word by Word: This [is] office [of] director.

The noun 'директор' is in the genitive case to show who the office belongs to.

  2. Мне нравится цвет твоего платья.

I like the color of your dress.

Word by Word: To me [it] pleases color [of] your dress.

Here, the genitive shows a quality (color) belonging to an object (dress).

  3. Где ключи соседа?

    Where are the neighbor's keys?

Word by Word: Where [are] keys [of] neighbor?

The possessor 'сосед' follows the possessed object 'ключи' and takes the genitive ending -а.

  4. Мы гуляли в центре города.

We were walking in the center of the city.

Word by Word: We walked in center [of] city.

This shows a part-to-whole relationship; the center is part of the city.

Common Mistakes

  • Not knowing the normal place of the genitive.

    Different MeaningЭто Ивана книга.
    Это книга Ивана.

The order 'Ивана книга' is possible when you stress whose book it is. In neutral speech, the genitive follows the noun it modifies: книга Ивана.

  • Using genitive personal pronouns for possession.

    Это машина меня.
    Это моя машина.

While nouns use the genitive for possession, personal pronouns use possessive adjectives (мой, твой, etc.). The genitive of 'я' (меня) is used after prepositions, not for direct possession.
