нет + Genitive
Existential Absence with Нет
In Russian, to say 'there is no' or 'I don't have,' you use the word нет followed by a noun or pronoun in the Genitive case.
How It Works
The pattern нет + родительный (Genitive) is the standard way to express existential negation in the present tense.
1. Present Tense:
The word нет is a fixed form. It does not change for gender or number. It is the negative counterpart to есть. While есть takes the Nominative, нет always requires the Genitive.
2. Possession:
This pattern is most commonly seen in the possession construction у + Genitive + есть. To say you don't have something, replace есть with нет: У меня нет машины (I don't have a car).
3. Tense Changes:
While нет is used for the present, the logic of the Genitive case remains in other tenses. Crucially, the verbs become impersonal, meaning they stay in one fixed form regardless of the noun's gender or number:
- Past: не было + Genitive. Note that the stress shifts to the particle: не́ было. Example: Денег не было (There was no money).
- Future: не будет + Genitive. Example: Времени не будет (There will be no time).
4. Identity vs. Existence:
Do not confuse this with не + Nominative. Use не to say what something is NOT (identity). Use нет to say something is NOT THERE (existence).
Example: Это не вода (This is not water) vs. Здесь нет воды (There is no water here).
Examples (4)
- У меня нет времени.
I have no time.
Word by Word: At me there-is-no of-time.
The noun 'время' (time) changes to the Genitive form 'времени' after 'нет'.
- В холодильнике нет молока.
There is no milk in the fridge.
Word by Word: In fridge there-is-no of-milk.
'Молоко' (milk) is in the Genitive case 'молока'.
- Его сегодня нет на работе.
He is not at work today.
Word by Word: Of-him today there-is-no on work.
When a person is absent, the pronoun also goes into the Genitive ('он' becomes 'его').
- Здесь нет сахара.
There is no sugar here.
Word by Word: Here there-is-no of-sugar.
A simple statement of absence using the Genitive 'сахара'.
Common Mistakes
Using the Nominative case after 'нет'.
У меня нет машина.У меня нет машины.Learners often use the base (Nominative) form because English does not change the noun. In Russian, 'нет' strictly requires the Genitive case.
Using 'не есть' to negate existence.
Тут не есть хлеб.Тут нет хлеба.In the present tense, you cannot simply put 'не' before 'есть'. You must use the specific word 'нет'.
Using the nominative when you mean 'there were no books'.
Different MeaningКниги не были в сумке.Книг не было в сумке.«Книги не были в сумке» is correct for specific books: 'those books were not in the bag'. To say there were no books at all, use the impersonal genitive: «Книг не было в сумке».
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand existential absence with 'нет', learners first need to be familiar with the basic concept of existence (есть) and the simple negative particle 'нет'. Additionally, since 'нет' requires the genitive case, familiarity with the genitive in the context of possession provides a helpful structural bridge.
