где
Where Question for Location
Где (gde) means 'where' and is used to ask about a fixed location. It is strictly static, meaning it asks where something is, not where it is going.
How It Works
The interrogative adverb где is one of the most essential words for beginners. It is used to identify the position of something in space.
1. The Spatial Triad: Static vs. Dynamic
Unlike English, which often uses 'where' for different directions, Russian makes a sharp distinction between three types of spatial questions:
- Где: Used for static location (Where is it?).
- куда: Used for destination (Where to?).
- откуда: Used for origin (Where from?).
2. Sentence Structure
In a neutral word order, где usually appears at the beginning of the sentence. Because Russian omits the verb 'to be' in the present tense (see nominal predicates), a question can be as simple as 'Где' + a noun in the nominative case.
3. Answering the Question
Questions starting with где typically require an answer using:
- The prepositional case (e.g., в парке). Note that some masculine nouns use a special locative -у ending (e.g., в лесу, в саду).
- Adverbs of place like здесь (here), там (there), or дома (at home).
- The preposition у + Genitive to indicate being 'at' someone's place (e.g., у Анны - at Anna's). Note that unlike possession, 'есть' is not used here.
4. Relative Clauses
Beyond questions, где acts as a relative pronoun to connect two parts of a sentence, describing a location mentioned previously (e.g., Это дом, где я живу - This is the house where I live). See relative place words for more.
Examples (5)
- Где мой телефон?
Where is my phone?
Word by Word: Where my phone?
A simple question using 'где' with a nominative noun. Note that there is no word for 'is' in the Russian present tense.
- Где вы живёте?
Where do you live?
Word by Word: Where you live?
Here, 'где' asks about the location of a continuous state (living).
- Где находится аптека?
Where is the pharmacy located?
Word by Word: Where finds-itself pharmacy?
A slightly more formal way to ask for a location using the verb 'находиться'.
- Где ты сейчас?
Where are you now?
Word by Word: Where you now?
Asking for a person's current static location.
- Где книга? — Она на столе.
Where is the book? — It is on the table.
Word by Word: Where book? — It on table.
This shows a typical answer using the prepositional case (на столе).
Common Mistakes
Using 'где' for destination (movement toward a place).
Где ты идёшь?Куда ты идёшь?If you are asking about someone's destination (Where are you going?), you must use 'куда'. Using 'где' implies you are asking where they are currently walking within a specific area.
Answering a 'где' question with the accusative case.
Где ты? — В школу.Где ты? — В школе.'В школу' (accusative) means 'to the school' (destination). Since 'где' asks for location, you must use the prepositional case 'в школе' (in the school).
