Two Pronouns Together
When two pronouns come before a verb, me or te comes first and lo, la or ne follows.
How It Works
| Pronouns | Written | Example |
|---|---|---|
| me + lo | me lo | Me lo dona. (He gives it to me.) |
| te + la | te la | Te la mandi deman. (I send it to you tomorrow.) |
| me + ne | me'n | Me'n dona. (He gives me some.) |
| te + ne | te'n | Te'n pòrti. (I bring you some.) |
| me + l' (before a vowel) | me l' | Me l'a dich. (He told it to me.) |
With me, te, nos and vos, the pronoun for the person comes first, and the pronoun for the thing comes second. The same order holds in the negative and in the compound past: Me lo dona pas. (He does not give it to me.) Me l'a donat. (He gave it to me.)
The pair with ne is the most common. Write it as one unit, me'n, te'n, with an apostrophe. Occitan has no pronoun en.
Nos and vos work the same way (nos la, vos las), and they can also shorten before ne and lo, as in Contracted Pronoun Pairs.
With li (to him, to her) the order is the other way around, and the thing comes first: Lo li donarai deman. (I will give it to him tomorrow.)
