मध्ये names the group you are choosing from.

How It Works

मध्ये means among, out of or from within a group. It joins the word before it, the same way घरमा and रामले do.

Use it with a number (तीनमध्ये), with a plural noun (साथीहरूमध्ये) or with a group word such as सबै (सबैमध्ये). The sentence then picks one or more members of that group.

  • With सबैभन्दा it names the best, biggest or fastest of the group.
  • With a question word it asks which one: तिमीहरूमध्ये कसले means which of you.

मध्ये picks from a group or a set of choices. To compare just two things, use भन्दा: यो त्योभन्दा राम्रो छ.

It does not usually take को before it. Write यी तीनमध्ये, not यी तीनको मध्ये.

  1. यी तीनमध्ये मलाई यो सबैभन्दा राम्रो लाग्छ।

    Out of these three, I like this one best.

    तीनमध्ये names the group, and सबैभन्दा picks the best.

  2. हाम्रा साथीहरूमध्ये सरिता सबैभन्दा छिटो दौडिन्।

    Among our friends, Sarita ran fastest.

    साथीहरूमध्ये joins the plural noun.

  3. तिमीहरूमध्ये कसले यो काम गर्‍यो?

    Which of you did this work?

    कसले asks about one member of the group तिमीहरू.

  4. बाह्र महिनामध्ये मलाई असोज मन पर्छ।

    Out of the twelve months, I like Asoj.

    महिनामध्ये picks one month from twelve.

Common Mistakes

  • A learner adds को before मध्ये.

    यी तीनको मध्ये मलाई यो मन पर्छ।
    यी तीनमध्ये मलाई यो मन पर्छ।

    मध्ये joins the word before it and usually takes no को.
