-एको होला

Guessing About Something Done

Level 4Sounds Like ēkō hōlā

-एको होला means has probably happened.

How It Works

This pattern guesses about a finished action. The verb takes -एको and होला follows.

DoerForm
ऊपुगेको होला
उनीहरूपुगेका होलान्
तपाईं, उहाँपाउनुभएको होला

A woman takes -एकी ... होली as ऊ and -एकी ... होलिन् as उनी: सरिता पुगेकी होलिन्. A woman you respect highly takes -नुभएको होला, like a man.

Examples: मैले चाबी कतै राखेको होला (I may have put the key somewhere), तपाईंले मेरो सन्देश पाउनुभएको होला (you have probably received my message).

When the verb has an object, the doer takes ले as in any perfect. Use plain होला for a guess about a place or state, and -एको छ for something you know happened. The negative puts न- on the verb: ऊ अहिलेसम्म नपुगेको होला means he has probably not reached yet.

Common Mistakes

  • A learner gives a plural doer the singular form.

    उनीहरू अहिलेसम्म पुगेको होला।
    उनीहरू अहिलेसम्म पुगेका होलान्।

A plural person usually takes -एका and होलान्.
