-एको भए

Unreal Conditions

Level 4Sounds Like ēkō bha'ē

-एको भए starts an unreal condition.

How It Works

An unreal condition is an if that is not true, or was not true. Build it in two parts:

  • The if part: verb + -एको भए. Add न- for the negative: नपरेको भए.
  • The result part: verb + -थेँ, -थ्यौँ, -थ्यो.

Example: पानी नपरेको भए हामी पोखरा जान्थ्यौँ (if it had not rained, we would have gone to Pokhara).

The result usually uses the habitual endings, but it does not tell a habit here. Use -ए भने for a real if: पानी परे भने म जाँदिनँ.

The result clause never takes the plain past. Write किन्थेँ, not किनेँ.

Examples (5)

  1. मसँग पैसा भएको भए म घर किन्थेँ।

If I had money, I would buy a house.

    The result ends in किन्थेँ.

  2. तिमीले पहिले भनेको भए म आउँथेँ।

If you had told me earlier, I would have come.

भनेको भए is the unreal if.

  3. पानी नपरेको भए हामी पोखरा जान्थ्यौँ।

If it had not rained, we would have gone to Pokhara.

The negative न- joins the verb.

  4. उहाँले सोध्नुभएको भए म सबै कुरा बताउँथेँ।

If he had asked, I would have told everything.

The respected doer takes सोध्नुभएको, and the two clauses have different doers.

  5. बस नछुटेको भए म समयमै पुग्थेँ।

If I had not missed the bus, I would have arrived on time.

    पुग्थेँ is the result.

Common Mistakes

  • A learner ends the result with the plain past.

    मसँग पैसा भएको भए म घर किनेँ।
    मसँग पैसा भएको भए म घर किन्थेँ।

The result clause needs the -थेँ form.
