भनिन्छ

Asking What Something Is Called

Level 4Sounds Like bhanincha

भनिन्छ is the passive of भन्नु and means is called.

How It Works

भनिन्छ comes from भन्नु (to say) with the passive ending -इन्छ. It means is called or is said.

  • Ask a name: यसलाई नेपालीमा के भनिन्छ?
  • Give a name: यो फललाई सुन्तला भनिन्छ।
  • Ask how a word is said: यो शब्द कसरी भनिन्छ?

The thing that gets the name takes लाई, and the name comes right before भनिन्छ. No doer is named.

If you want to name the speakers, use भन्छन् (they say). The entry नेपालीमा के भन्छन् teaches that everyday question. Both forms are common, but भनिन्छ sounds more like a general fact or a dictionary answer.
