Saying What You Need

Level 1Sounds Like cāhincha

चाहिन्छ works like मन पर्छ: the person comes first with लाई.

How It Works

Nepali uses चाहिन्छ for what a person needs or wants.

WhoWhatVerb

The person takes लाई, so the pattern is the same as मन पर्छ.

The question word is (what do you need?). A shopkeeper may ask it, and you can answer with a measure:

The negative is written चाहिँदैन. The chandrabindu on इ is part of the spelling: चाहिदैन is wrong.

चाहिन्छ is for things. To say you want to do something, a later entry teaches another pattern.

Examples (5)

I need a glass of water.

मलाई marks the person, and चाहिन्छ ends the sentence.

    I do not need sugar.

    चाहिँदैन is the negative.

    What do you need?

    के asks what is needed.

    We need a room.

A counted thing sits between the person and the verb.

    Does she want tea?

    The polite question uses

Common Mistakes

  • Using म instead of मलाई.

The person who needs takes

  • Leaving out the chandrabindu in the negative.

The negative is चाहिँदैन, with a chandrabindu.
