-ता येणे

Knowing How and Being Able

Level 3Sounds Like tā yēṇē

The person who can takes -ला, and the verb does not follow the gender of the person who can.

How It Works

-ता येणे says that someone has learned how to do an action. It also says that circumstances allow it.

PositiveNegative
मला पोहता येते.मला पोहता येत नाही.
तुला पोहता येते.तुला पोहता येत नाही.
तिला पोहता येईल.तिला पोहता येणार नाही.

The verb stem takes -ता, and येते does not follow the gender of the person who can. The tense shows in येते, येत होते or येईल.

If the action has an object, put it before the stem: तिला सायकल चालवता येते. आजोबांना अजूनही गाडी चालवता येते.

For knowing a language, say मला मराठी येते and leave out the -ता form. Use मला मराठी लिहिता येते to say that you can write it.

-ऊ शकणे is similar, but it also gives permission and talks about possibility.
