मला मराठी येते

Knowing a Language or Skill

Level 2Sounds Like malā marāṭhī yētē

The verb agrees with the language or skill.

How It Works

Use येणे for languages and everyday skills such as cooking and sewing. The knower comes first in the -ला form, then the thing known, then the verb.

Thing knownGenderVerb
मराठी, इंग्रजी, हिंदीfeminineयेते
स्वयंपाकmasculineयेतो
शिवणकामneuterयेते
दोन भाषाpluralयेतात

Respect changes nothing here. आजोबांना संस्कृत येते uses the singular येते because संस्कृत is the subject, and आजोबांना only names the knower.

For no, put नाही after the verb stem with -त: मला तमिळ येत नाही. (I don't know Tamil.) A little is थोडे or थोडी, matching the thing known: मला थोडी हिंदी येते.

Use मराठी येते for a language or skill you have learned. For a single action you are able to do, use the form with -ता येणे, such as पोहता येते.

Examples (5)

  1. मला मराठी येते.

    I know Marathi.

मला names the knower and मराठी is the thing known.

  2. तुला इंग्रजी येते का?

    Do you know English?

तुला asks about the listener; येते agrees with इंग्रजी.

  3. आजोबांना संस्कृत येते.

    Grandfather knows Sanskrit.

The verb stays singular because संस्कृत is the subject.

  4. मला स्वयंपाक येतो.

    I can cook.

येतो is masculine because स्वयंपाक is masculine.

  5. सईला थोडी हिंदी येते.

    थोडी and येते both match feminine हिंदी.

Common Mistakes

  • Using मी as the subject.

    मी मराठी येते.
    मला मराठी येते.

The knower takes -ला. In this meaning, मी cannot be the subject of येणे.

  • Making the verb agree with the knower.

    मला स्वयंपाक येते.
    मला स्वयंपाक येतो.

स्वयंपाक is masculine, so the verb is येतो.
